Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.
Planet
As part of our Responsible Travel policy, we advise customers to take reusable water bottles with them on tour. Our local leaders actively do not distribute single-use plastic water bottles. Tap water is safe to drink and they encourage customers to refill their bottles from the hotel or if there are any springs on the walks.Walking is arguably the greenest from of travel with no carbon footprint. On this walking vacation we hike in the protected environment of the Lake District National Park. Our hikes allow us to explore with minimal impact on the natural world. Vehicle transfers are kept to a minimum and are relatively short in distance and provided by a local company.
As a travel company we are continually looking for ways to improve and are proud to be ‘Responsible in everything we do’. Education is key, and so all staff, Tour Leaders and partnering suppliers are trained in responsible and sustainable tourism. At our Head Office, we continually strive towards a sustainable and planet-friendly working environment, including having solar panels installed and a company commitment to reducing our plastic usage.
People
We stay in a rural hotel located in the hamlet of Seatoller in the Borrowdale Valley. All meals are provided at the hotel using locally sourced food where possible. On our walks we pass through a number of local villages and towns and clients are given freetime and have the opportunity to visit shops and cafes that helps to support local businesses. Our Tour Leaders are qualified, professional Mountain Leaders that live in the local area and are well trained in the importance of the protection of the environment in which they’re guiding you. We adhere to a Mountain Leader guiding ratio of 1:12, keeping our group size to a relatively small number means we avoid damaging the trails and cause less disturbance to wildlife.
As a company we have valuable and longstanding partnerships with UK charities Toilet Twinning and Send a Cow, plus many smaller initiatives and projects around the world. We’re members of the UK travel industry body AITO because we believe it’s important to share our knowledge and experience, as well as learn from other operators.
