Trips to bracing Bridlington and Skegness - travel journal

Girl on the beach
Every time a customer books one of our vacations and opts in to our Trip for a Trip scheme, we organise a day trip for a disadvantaged young person somewhere around the world to see their local tourist sites, often for the first time.

The Family Vacation Association is the leading national charity dedicated to providing breaks and day trips for families struggling with some of the toughest challenges life can bring.

Thanks to funding from Responsible Travel we were able to help two groups of families enjoy a day out at traditional seaside resorts on the bracing North Sea coastline.

Barnardo’s run the Rotherham Young Carers Project which provides support to children and young people from the age of 8 – 18 who give care to someone in their family, usually a parent, grandparent, sibling or someone very close to them. The person they care for will have a serious or long term illness, disability, mental health difficulties or problematic alcohol or drug misuse.

Journal 1 - Bridlington trip

Lundwood Family Centre in Barnsley offers activities, support and information for families. As part of their summer activities they took 20 families (40 children) to Bridlington for a day out for families who wouldn’t otherwise have had a trip outside Barnsley this summer.

Unfortunately the weather wasn’t very kind and it was extremely wet but everyone had a great time with some even going for a swim!

Quotes from day:
"Lovely trip and lovely staff"

"We have had a fab day"

"Thank you for the trip we have all enjoyed it"

"Brill Day"

Journal 2 - Skegness trip

This summer they took 12 families (19 children) to Skegness for a day out. Many of these families would struggle to get away on their own because of the additional challenges that having someone in the family with a disability presents. Because this trip was by coach, with a specially adapted minibus as well for wheelchairs, it meant that lots of families were able to take part and have a great day out at the seaside. And Skegness is perfect because it is so flat!

Quotes from the day:
"A lovely day out totally enjoyed it"

"It’s great getting out with other families"

"Great group of people, thanks for invite"

"Many thanks. It’s been a brilliant day out and made memories"
Impact: A great day out was had by families who wouldn’t have left Rotherham all summer otherwise.

Family Holiday Association logoAbout our partner organisation: The Family Vacation Association is the leading national charity dedicated to providing breaks and day trips for families struggling with some of the toughest challenges life can bring. It works with thousands of charities, social work departments, housing associations and NHS services who refer families in need of a break. In 2016 it helped over 11,000 children in 5,000 families get a short break or day out within the UK. For the majority of these families it was their first break away together and for over 1/3 was the first time that the children visited the beach.
