Things to do in Slovenia with kids
Horsey heaven
Horse-mad kids will love riding a snow-white Lipizzaner – stars of Vienna's Spanish Riding School - in historic Lipica where they originated. Parents can kick back with a carriage ride around majestic Lake Bled. Less experienced riders can head for equally gorgeous Lake Bohinj, to ride adorable pony-like Icelandic horses.
Speedy Slovenia
Satisfy even the most demanding adrenaline seekers with high-paced adventure activities throughout Slovenia's natural playground. Whizz down churning rapids on the Soca River, then tackle high ropes or go paragliding in the valleys of the stupendous Julian Alps. Tackle Slovenia's highest peak or mountain bike amazing alpine trails.
Fab forts
Spin unforgettable memories around colourful history exploring some of Europe's most atmospheric castles. The 1,000-year-old Bled Castle clings to a cliff above a magical lake, while Predjama's fortress offers witchcraft tales and amazing underground caverns. Check out medieval dance moves at lovely Celje Castle.
Simon Clifford, from our friends at Exodus, explains how a host of activities makes traveling in Slovenia with kids an exciting possibility: “Slovenia is great fun for families with active teenagers, who get bored just sitting on a beach and swimming in a pool. They do all the same activities that the adults do, including whitewater rafting, mountain biking and whizzing down one of Europe’s longest zip lines.”
Maria Vrgoc, from our family adventure vacation specialists Green World Vacations, says it’s hard to choose a favourite activity: “There are so many and it’s so personal, but the ones which pop up most are the white water rafting followed by the visit to the iconic Lake Bled. The SUP boarding on the Ljubljanica River (because the instructors are really great) and of course the mountain go-karts, which are simply hilarious fun!"
Luka Esenko, from our photography specialists Esenko Workshops, picks out flexible options for traveling in Slovenia with kids: “We have personalised tours for families, and we do our best so each family member will get what they like the most. Sometimes part of the family wants to do sightseeing or some sport activities and the other part does photography. Then they can join together for the rest of the day.”
