Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.
Planet
WILDLIFEWe have spent 15 years creating a sanctuary for wildlife within our tropical gardens. The endangered agouti is now a common sight, along with iguana, and a nesting armadillo that was first spotted in 2016. Over 70 species of birds can be viewed from our accommodations. We encourage their visits to our two acres of gardens on the luscious rainforest hillside in Castara with many bird feeders around the site, including on the verandas/terraces of the accommodations to help them thrive and give our guests first-hand experience of the joy they bring. By visiting us, we’re able to continue developing the habitat in and around the retreat to help the wildlife thrive.
SPONSORSHIP OF CORAL REGENERATION
Through our ongoing partnership with the Environmental Research Institute Charlottesville (ERIC), we sponsor coral reef regeneration in and around Castara Bay. Your visit will contribute towards this ongoing sponsorship, helping to rebuild the reef and secure its future, which is not only good for the environment, but gives guests and the local community wonderful snorkelling experiences.

SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITY & NEIGHBOURSWe care hugely about the local community - a quaint and authentic seine fishing village, known to be an exemplar for sustainable tourism in Tobago. For this retreat, as much food as possible will be sourced from the local village, helping to secure the livelihoods of many businesses outside of our own. We promote the local amenities in our welcome packs and advertise the local events and scene as much as possible so that when you visit you get to experience the joy of the local people and customs, but also help keep tourism sustainable here by shopping and eating in their establishments. Why not take the opportunity to support our local neighbour Dorn by renting a lovely, comfy sun lounger from her on the beach or go on a world-renown bird-watching trips with Newton George, an expert ornithologist and you pay him direct.
SUPPORT OUR STAFF
Several of our staff have set up their own independent businesses that provide high quality and valuable services to our guests. For instance, you can buy some homemade bread from one of our cleaning staff, Hermin; your transfer to and from the airport is through Porridge’s transfer business; go on a snorkelling tour through our wellness team’s business – we sponsored Judha and Leah’s snorkelling training with the Environmental Research Institute Charlottesville (ERIC), and they've subsequently set up their own eco-snorkelling tour business, taking guests out in the local bay. An important part of our ethos and sustainable outlook is that we take no commission for any of these locally-provided activities so that tourism can be shared, helping the local community to thrive. So, if you buy products and services outside of this retreat trip, you can have confidence that 100% of your money is going towards supporting local businesses and people.
