Vacation information

Small group tour, ideal for solos & couples:
Small group travel is not large group travel scaled down. It is modeled on independent travel – but with the advantage of a group leader to take care of the itinerary, accommodation and tickets, and dealing with the language. It’s easy to tick off the big sights independently – but finding those one-off experiences, local festivals, traveling markets and secret viewpoints is almost impossible for someone without the insider knowledge gained from years in the field. For those with limited time, a small group tour will save valuable time in planning, and on vacation.
Our top tip:
Be organised in your packing as you are transferring a lot on this trip. Bring your own helmet.
Trip type:
Small group, max 16 people, min. age 16
Activity level:
Moderate, 9 days of cycling, 30-70 kms/day.
Accomm:
2-3* pensions and hotels.
Included:
Flights, accommodation, all breakfasts, transport and luggage transfers, tour leader, airport transfers. Note: bike hire is extra.
Meals:
Lots of lovely local restaurants en route. Budget £10-15 per meal.
Solos:
Solo travelers welcome. Surcharge for own room.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Everything, from my first foray into Prague to my last walk on the Danube in Budapest. Its the history, the glory, the subjugation, the castles, the rivers and the people.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Do it!

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Besides a small positive economic impact, the ability to interact with locals and share instances was great. And besides our effort to "leave no trace", no noticeable environmental program.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

It takes a lot to help shape a trip to 4 countries with 16 people - three staff and 13 participants. And that includes daily shifting from cycling to necessary hot showers to walking tours and explainers. And it was done terrifically: Interests in cycling and history and friendships were more than satisfied. It lays the groundwork and strong desire for more travel!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Unesco heritage sites

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Be sure to book an extra day in Prague and Budapest

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. Being a cycling vacation, it was more environmentally friendly and we supported the economy by selecting local restaurants. However, it would be better if there were fewer van transfers

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

This was an excellent vacation and I am very glad I was a part of it. I will certainly look at other vacations from Responsible Travel in the future

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

Planet

Accommodation and Meals:
We prefer family run hotels to big international chains, so we will be spending 10 nights in locally owned and staffed hotels and pensions. All breakfasts are included and this will include locally sourced produce as much as possible. There will be a number of restaurants on offer in the evenings and many serve regional specialities- from dumplings in Austria to the Magyar cuisine of Hungary. We are keen to establish genuine connections between clients and locals, celebrating authentic cuisine and putting money directly in the community’s pocket.

Activity:
Nature is a tremendous asset to us all, so we strive to maintain the diversity of local ecosystems and the beauty of nature for future generations. As a cycling trip, we have a minimal impact on the environment; however we still take care to ensure that our itineraries do not interfere negatively with the environment in protected areas, national parks and buildings of historical significance. During our stay we take care to avoid damaging nature, such as by harming plants and animals, or littering. We also take care to maintain the natural tranquillity of the areas we visit.

Group Size:
This small group tour has a maximum of 16 participants, meaning that we have a low impact on the environments and communities we visit and are able to ensure that we do not disrupt or lead to the displacement of local people. The small number also allows us to stay in unique, family-run hotels that cannot benefit from coach tours and other mass tourism due to their limited sizes.

UK Office:
It all starts at home so we have first worked at reducing our carbon footprint in our UK Offices. Through energy conservation measures and recycling policies, we are proud to be actively reducing the waste produced and our impact on the environment. We support various projects all over the world to try and give something back to the places we visit.

People

A Fair Deal:
We have established a long term partnership with a local operator, who is committed to promoting tourism as a means of income throughout Central Europe, in particular to the rural communities on the tour. Your guides are native Central Europeans and in exchange for their local expertise, they are paid and treated fairly. The leaders will give a briefing on responsible tourism issues to help you understand how you can help reduce your impact and maximise the benefits to the local community from your visit.

Local Craft and Culture:
En-route we cycle through number of beautiful renaissance towns where we can visit castles, walk through beautifully maintained chateau´s gardens and admire the stunning architecture of the villages of southern Bohemia. We also cycle across fertile vineyards where we have the opportunity to visit a family run wine cellar. Together with a local wine maker we can taste some of their best wines and appreciate this regional craft.
