Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.
Planet
CARBON REDUCTIONWe make every effort to reduce flights on all of our tours - regrettably, the remote interior of the Zambeze Delta cannot be accessed by road, and must be accessed by air. However, our accommodation in the Delta is exceedingly eco-conscious, designed to fit seamlessly into the environment. The camp uses only solar power, re-using water and emitting almost nil noise or light pollution. Shared local, electric-powered and human-powered transport are not available on this tour.
We recommend all clients look into methods of reducing the carbon footprint of their vacation, including selecting inbound and outbound flights diligently. All food is locally sourced and seasonal, with vegetarian and vegan options available.
ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE
It is important to note that our hosts in Coutada 11 are a hunting outfit - when not leading photographic tourist groups, the local team lead big game hunting expeditions into the Coutada. We recognise that this will mean that this itinerary is not for everyone. However, the chance to engage with the issues around big game hunting in a multi-use ecosystem is an opportunity to understand these core issues in far more detail than most people engaged in this debate. Our local partners do a huge amount for conservation, supported by the revenue from our visit, including anti-poaching patrols, re-introduction programmes and community engagement initiatives. Our camp, and all operations within the Delta, have negligible environmental impact, with carefully constructed camps with no long-term footprint. All activities focussed on restoring wildlife to this area are supported by the entrance fees and taxes including in the tour cost. The activities we support by way of our visit include those led by the Cheetah Conservation Fund, who have supported the reintroduction of cheetah to the Delta.
We ask all customers to respect nature and wildlife dring our tours - we do not permit any behaviour that may damage the environment or distress wildlife. We only drive off-road in areas that are not ecologically sensitive, and we consider all sightings terminated when and if an animal choose to move away from us. We will never remain at a sighting where our presence is disturbing the animal we are viewing. At night, we will never spotlight a young, injured or otherwise distressed animal. Expert FGASA-qualified guides from the local area accompany this tour, as does an experienced tour leader.
People
LOCAL ECONOMYAccommodation used in Beira is 100% Mozambican owned and operated. Our camp in the Delta is owned and managed in partnership between Mozambican and South African stakeholders. All accommodation options used employ people from local communities, including guides, drivers, cooks, housekeeping staff and clerical staff. We encourage visits to local villages and markets during this itinerary.
EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY
Over 90% of people employed during the course of this tour are Mozambican, and from local communities. Visitors will note that over 50% of staff employed by our accommodation partners in Beira are women, with around 20% of staff employed by our partners in the Delta being women. All staff are paid at least the minimum wage.
We are deeply committed to diversity and our own workplace, and are pleased to say that this tour is LGBTQ+ friendly. Due to the wild and remote nature of areas visited on this tour, we regret that this tour is not suitable for people with mobility issues or cognitive impairment.
