Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.
Planet
WasteThe Maldives is a fragile environment. It is more fragile and more in danger than most other places on earth. The country’s existence relies on healthy coral reefs and a moderation of the sea level rise. The Maldives struggles to eliminate all the rubbish produced by over 1 million tourists per year and whilst educating locals in waste management is all part of a large project, as visitors to their home we encourage our guests to support in the following ways and help by leading by example. For this reason and for the obvious difficulty in eliminating several materials, we suggest to bring back the empty containers of shampoo, bath foam, conditioner, cream and photograph film. We also advise to bring cotton shopping bags to eliminate the need for plastic bags when shopping and to pack a reusable water bottle to avoid the purchase of small plastic water bottles.
Suppliers
We choose suppliers that match our environmental values. For example the rooms of this particular hotel we partner are designed and finished with a very traditional Maldivian style of cement flooring and coating. These floors are Eco-friendly & energy saving. They use less energy in production compared to any other flooring types and no trees are cut down. It’s recyclable and it does not contain harmful VOC (volatile organic compounds).
Dives
We recognise local campaigns and support environmental awareness dives to clear rubbish from local island harbour areas. Whilst on dives, guides will show guests how to view marine life in a way which does not infringe on or damage the fragile ecosystem.
People
Traveling with respectWe observe local customs and culture.
We respect the Islamic faith and the rituals and festivals associated with it.
We respect local dress standards and cultural requirements.
We educate our guests and agents through pre trip information and in country briefings.
We encourage guests to learn basic greetings in Dhivehi the local language.
We ensure our tours include opportunities to engage with locals and learn about the local way of life.
We observe basic human rights and support an individual’s right to be treated with equality, freedom and respect both in and outside of the workplace.
Cultural tours on Dhigurah allow our guests access into the local community to learn more about the Maldivian culture first hand.
Campaigning for change
We recognise local issues and actively campaign to address them. Many NGOs and marine charity organizations work selflessly, fostering community-focused conservation initiatives in the Maldives. We seek out ways to increase their exposure to a wider audience and provide opportunities to interact with our guests.
Through this collaboration our guests can become actively involved in conservation programs and learn how they can be responsible during their stay in the Maldives.
Many of our tours include a financial contribution to the organization who assist us in hosting the experience.
