The north and south are very different. It’s hard to comment on only one memorable moment. Hiking in the Simien Mountains NP and encountering the Gelada monkeys as well as the gorgeous Ginbar waterfalls. In the south exploring the diverse tribes and their unique traditions, being able to witness the passage to adulthood among the Hamer tribe plus so much more!2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Be prepared to be surprised. It can be more basic than expected and more luxurious when not anticipated. Surprises are everywhere! Be open!3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes, definitely. Local guides go through associations. Tourists are distributed among them. Local people are hired to make the vacation easier.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

There were so many, from feeding Hyenas, to getting up close and personal with a crocodiles and hippos, Lalibela with its amazing Rock churches, visiting the tribes In the South, and meeting many Ethiopian people who are kind, generous ,helpful, together with a great sense of humour.2. Take pens to give the children, always wave back and smile!!! The roads can be very bumpy so ladies a good sports bra is essential! You get a free Ethiopian massage on some journeys! Wear comfortable covered in sandals, shoes or trainers. Take a sense of humour and an open mind and you won’t be disappointed.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes, we paid for the privilege to visit people in their homes, most of the tribes were very happy and proud to show us their way of living and encouraged us to participate in some daily activities e.g making bread, dancing, sampling food and drink. Everything is recycled, up-cycled nothing goes to waste.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Fantastic, amazing, it went well beyond our expectations!! One of the best ever and we hope to return soon to visit the areas we didn’t get to. Eskinder, the owner of the tour company went above and beyond to accommodate our needs, all of our guides and drivers were professional, polite and fun, they enhanced our trip with their local knowledge and humour. Eskinder invited us to his home for a traditional dinner and coffee ceremony with his family, which was wonderful. His generosity and kindness was appreciated. We were greated at our lodge in the simien mountains by the Gelarda baboons. They were so gentle and friendly and the mountains are so beautiful and green we were amazed.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Tourism is very much needed in Ethiopia and benefits many people from guides, hotel staff, restaurants and museum staff.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

There were so many, it is almost impossible to pick one. One of the highlights was definitely the shoulder dancing and being included to dance with the professionals, the traditional cuisine, learning to cook with the people in the community, going to a local market in Lalibela, seeing the Blue Nile Falls and learning about the origins of the river Nile and learning about Ethiopia's extremely rich history through discussions with Eskinder and Samuel and from visiting places like The Institute of Ethiopian Studies.2. Please be open minded about the situation in Ethiopia. We were perfectly safe. All hotels and check points at borders have security. Be prepared for slight breathlessness due to the high altitude. It probably won't affect anyone healthy, but it may cause slight breathlessness initially when climbing or walking up hill.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
I believe our vacation benefitted some local people because we didn't stay in an expensive all inclusive vacation, which locals don't have access to. We stayed in hotels near to or within the city and went out and explored. Throughout our vacation we tipped people and even spent one afternoon in a community with a family learning how to prepare traditional food and we also purchased goods from local sellers.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Excellent. The experience was phenomenal. I'm not sure I have adequate words to describe what I feel. Throughout the vacation, my mum, sister and I marvelled at the things we saw, how we were made to feel and from the hospitality and kindness of the Ethiopian people.John Miller review 23 Dec 2019

Be flexible. Its a developing country. Both the physical infrastructure and training of staff serving the tourist industry are works in progress. We were blown away by Ethiopia. The scenery was stunning with the Blue Nile waterfall and awesome volcanic mountains. The rock churches were impressive and so different at the different areas. They were definitely worth the walk/scramble up to see them in Tigray. The tour was extremely well organised by the operator, and all of the local guides and drivers were knowledgeable and friendly. Ethiopia was certainly one of the safest countries that we have been to.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
The best collection of handicrafts were at the stalls on the way to the monasteries on Lake Tana. We went at the beginning of the vacation and so thought we would see more of the same as we travelled around but then didn't and regretted not buying all our souvenirs then! For Addis, just tell Eskinder what you want to eat and he will take you to some great restaurants.3. Local guides were used throughout out tour. At some places an extra 'guide' was hired (part of the tour and we only paid a tip) which provided employment for the locals and dissuaded from children from dropping out of school to harass tourists.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

It was good to see and experience contrasting aspects of Northern Ethiopia, both cultural and natural, and having guides who knew their town or region made a huge difference to our trip. They were universally informed and engaging, and able to answer our many questions. Probably the most memorable visit was the rock-cut churches of Lalibela, still a living place of faith and worship, and an extraordinary, ancient site. The majestic landscape and creatures of the Simiens were also wonderful.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Take your time! As well as trips with the guides it's good to have enough time just to wander around yourself and soak up the sights and sounds of Ethiopia.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
We asked our guides and organisers about this, and it was good to feel that a decent wage was going directly to the people who helped us. Everything was memorable. Perhaps the "treks" in Janamora and West Mesket stand out, or the smiley friendliness of everyone. Eskinder from the tour company coordinated everything perfectly, it was a joy to deal with him. Being with local people all the time meant we could start to get some real insights into the fascinating country.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Research well and agree your priorities. Ethiopia is a large country with plenty to do... we decided to leave Axum, Tigray and Omo until another trip and focus on slow travel for two weeks in the highlands, followed by trips to Harar, Bale mountains and a couple of Rift Valley Lakes in 8 days. Slightly rushed but well worth the extra traveling.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Very much so. We stayed in villages for 7 nights, and all guides, drivers, donkey handlers and our overall tour operator, were locally based.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Some parts but because of distance we took four internal flights and the entrance fees for the churches went to the church and not to the community, although the guides were all local and so the community benefited indirectly by us using them4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
The scenery was fantastic and we saw lots of wildlife which was wonderful. The churches were amazing architecturally and decoration though for us the churches were a bit much (we didn't need to know what each and every picture depicted!). The most memorable part of our vacation were the days spent in Lalibela, Gheralta and Axum. The rock churches were extraordinary, as were some of the climbs to get to them! The early morning procession in Axum was remarkable. The views and landscapes as we drove around were very beautiful and everyone we met was friendly and helpful. In terms of excitement, we got up very close to a large group of crocodiles sunbathing near Konso on Lake Chamo.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Travelers should be aware of the very long distances between places and the amount of time spent in the car. The other option is to fly - but that is also a lot of travel time plus carbon impact. The quality of accommodation varies a lot with some that is lovely and others that aren’t great. We would recommend putting in a couple of rest days on a longer trip and sticking to the really special places, rather than trying to see everything. Also, unless you love injera, the food isn’t the most exciting - apart from the fruit which is wonderful. The drivers and guides that the company found for us were all excellent - knowledgeable about their area, enthusiastic and professional.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
We stayed almost exclusively in locally owned hotels and all our guides and drivers were local and so we very much hope the vacation benefited local people. We didn’t get much sense about environmental impact or support for conservation.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
It was a really memorable vacation, helped a great deal by the fascinating history and people of Ethiopia - including our guides and drivers who could not have taken more trouble. We visited Bahirdar, Gonder, the Simien mountains, Axum and Lalibela in eight days - too much packed into such a short time with significant travel distances between each base. Take longer - 12 - 14 days and you won't be so weary. There is plenty to see and do but build in time to unwind and just enjoy. Internal flights are a real joy - with efficient airports and helpful staff.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
By booking with this operator, an Ethiopian travel company employing only local travel guides and drivers, we felt we were at least providing employment to the locals. Make sure you budget for tips, although our guides and drivers were paid we felt greatly indebted to them for their expertise so we were keen to show our appreciation. Owner/manager Eskinder of the tour company was outstanding. He will meet you on arrival and ensure that the staff up-country provide you with a memorable experience.4. Difficult to say as there were so many - but the visit to Tigray was astonishing. Fabulous mountain views and the red rocks and lush vegetation was impressive.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Eskinder from the tour company gave some useful advice around our itinerary and included a couple of stops we wouldn't have considered without his input - the Simien Mountains and Tigray were both lovely additions to a basic trip around the Northern Circuit..3. We had local guides, drivers, visited local restaurants and bought things in small local shops. The lodges we stayed in were very eco aware. BUT the use of plastic bottles is having a huge effect on the waste/rubbish seen all over and there was no option to buy glass, recyclable bottles. I was disappointed that hotels/lodges did not provide filtered water to reduce the need to buy plastic.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Thank you Jane and Rodney. It was our pleasure being at your service. I also like to thank you for raising the issue of plastic bottles that you have noticed on the streets. After reading your comments, I had initiated a discussion among accommodation and hotel owners which I think are playing a part in the problem though they cannot be wholly responsible.
Generally the scale is not as severe as not many people especially in the rural areas use bottle waters given that water is a scarce resource there. The hotels give the empty bottles to the locals who use them as containers then the bottles end up trashed on the streets.
In Addis, there is a large scale recycling project which bottles are collected by the companies. It is also a source of income for many young people.
To curb the problem, though it requires interventions on a large scale, supported by appropriate government policies, we are speaking to small actors and initiatives to extend their projects in helping out the rural environment targeting especially the tourist destinations.
After our discussion, the accommodation owners have decided to provide purified water as an option at least at the bars and reception areas. We have also discussed to stop supplying the plastic bottles to the locals as repeated use and reuse is associated with health hazards.

Seeing Ethiopia’s spectacular landscapes. Although we are not religious we especially enjoyed trekking to the hidden rock churches in the Tigray region. The Gheralta lodge we stayed in there was also fantastic. The staff at the Mayleko lodge in Gondar were great as was our Gondar driver Mustafa and our guide King.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Axum and Tigray are not included on some itineraries but were the highlight for us. However, some of the treks to the Tigray churches include some steep climbs that require a reasonable degree of fitness and courage! The Simien mountains can get chilly at night. The Ethiopian people are extremely friendly and hospitable. However, they are extremely poor, especially in the Amhara region, which may come as a shock to some. Be prepared for some “hassle” especially in Lalibela and at the Blue Nile falls near Bahir Dar. Don’t forget insect repellent. Many people we met were bitten by insects and/or bed bugs. Might be wise to take a sheet sleeping bag to be on the safe side. Enjoy the injera. You will eat a lot of it!3. Yes - our Ethiopian tour company uses local guides and drivers in all of the places we visited. They also support several local projects. By booking direct with them I am sure that our vacation benefited local people and the local economy. A number of the places where we stayed or visited - e.g. Simien Lodge, Ben Abeba restaurant in Lalibela also do great work to hire and train local people4. This is very difficult to answer because there are so many memorable aspects to the trip for example the hikes in the Simien mountains with all the monkeys, the Tigray church on the top of the cliff, the rock churches of Lalibela, the art work in some of the churches.2. I would be sure to let your guides know if you want to eat more of the local food. Most tourists seem to prefer to eat the western food in the hotels which is not as good as what the local enjoy. Of course because you are using lots of different guides and drivers who you obviously tip. It was recommended to give about 200 Birr to each of the drivers and guides but if you have them for a few days I think it is better to at least double that.4. The vacation was excellent and well planned. The drivers are very careful and drive safely. The guides were helpful, flexible and caring and the company is very well run. Look around you when you are missing your 1st world comforts and notice how much better off you are compared to others.3. I really hope that it benefited local people by helping support their salary for a short while. Basically I am trying to say that I hope that the more the tourism industry develops the more people on the ground will benfit financially, as well as improve campsite sustanability (waste and toilets)4. 1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
The most beautiful sight must have been the Blue Nile waterfalls, which were just awesome. Followed by Lalibela and Axum. The entire countryside, culture, sights and sounds are amazing too to see. The entire vacation exceeded our expectations, but then, that depends on how high you fix them to start with.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
1) If you come from a developed country, you do NOT need yellow fewer vaccination (unlike stated everywhere, this has changed). Nobody asked us for it or checked on it. 2) Immigration officers are friendly and efficient. 3) If you spoke to people who went there more than 2 years ago, a lot has changed since, especially the roads. They now have mostly asphalt roads (build by the Chinese) and transportation is getting faster and faster from one place to another. Of course, there will be some small parts of the roads which will have holes (but this is Africa :-)). In Simien Mountain, the roads are rural and you will travel with a 4x4, but not extremely bumpy (unless it rains). 4) don't worry about the internal flights (propeller planes (Bombardier)), they are great, safe and well maintained (as Ethiopian Airlines is part of Star Alliance group). 5) for the internal flights, you ARE allowed to bring water, soft drinks through the Xray (yes! don't ask why, you just can), but not for the international flights. 6) for the internal flights, they will confiscate your lighters if you are a smoker (not for the International flight; it's ok to bring through. Don't ask why). 7) The hotels were the best available in the respective towns. They were all clean with running water and shower and with a good breakfast. 8) The weather in Simien Mountain is cold, unless the sun shines. If it rains, you will defnitely feel the cold. Please note that the rooms, bar and restaurant are extremely cold. They claim that they have floor heating, but I felt nothing of all this, as we used up all the spare blankets in the room to keep warm. In fact, we called the agency to cancel the second night there and went back to Gondar. (agency confirmed the changed within 10mins, very efficient). BUT again, that was our choice, nothing wrong with the hotel at all. (may be we live in Asia for too long and cannot take a little cold :-)). SO, take your jumpers, socks, hiking boots, bonnets, gloves, thick jackets and whatever else you might need to keep warm. 9) we felt safe all the way too.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Tourism usually benefits the locals depending on how one behaves once there. That's an independent choice.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
In short: FANTASTIC. The tour operator (boss: Eskinder) is a great company to book your vacations with. He is friendly, speaks very good English and he will organise for you whatever you wish to see, discover, eat, etc. Very adaptable. I will give it below a 4* rating out of 5* as I believe that there is always room for improvement in any country where one spends its vacations. It will never be perfect, BUT, this was as good as it can get for Ethiopia. Well done, Eskinder and thanks for a great vacations. Highly enjoyed it. Time in Addis needs to be thought through and booked with a local company as no hotels have any trips on offer and there are no site seeing tours of Addis available except through local drivers/companies which you really need to have recommended.3. It was good to support local people and to see what can be done to improve their lives. One tribal village in the south (Konso) is a World Heritage Site and it was interesting to see how this support has enabled a supply of good drinking water to be provided.4. There was soooo much that was memorable. Ethiopia - a land of worship, walking, working, and winding (roads). The scenery is extraordinary, and the rock-cut churches are unforgettable. Totally totally awe-inspiring. Loved the old soul faces. The church paintings were fascinating although curatorial and conservation practices very questionable. But wonderful to see these ancient churches which are still so central to everyday contemporary life in Ethiopia. We were there for Meskel so that was also one of the big highlights along with chanting echoing into our hotel rooms on various Saints Days. We loved the markets with the hub-bub of traders, livestock and general activity. Have endless photos of donkeys, camels and big-horned cattle. Loved the bird life and the Gelada baboons were amazing. Could go on and on about this wonderful country.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Eskinder who runs the vacation company did us really proud. He organized a wonderful itinerary with a superb driver Haptamu. We drove with Haptamu for 14 days . One day we drove 5 and a half hours on winding mountain passes before coming to any straight road. And he managed potholes, trucks, pedestrians and livestock of every description in a completely safe way. The time of year was perfect as the weather was really beautiful - not hot at all, very temperate and only one morning of rain in 16 days. PLUS there were wonderful aloes, autumn flowers and of course the gorgeous yellow Meskel flowers EVERYWHERE. I took hiking poles and they were invaluable when visiting the Cliff churches in Tigray. Getting to Lalibela and then Addis involved a 4 day drive with 2 overnight stops. We told Eskinder beforehand that we wanted to drive rather than fly so it was our decision. We left Gheralta Lodge for a beautiful drive to Mekele where we spent the night. It's do-able to arrive by car in Mekele and then fly straight to Lalibela. ie one day of travel rather than 2. From Lalibela to Addis was also a long drive stopping overnight at Dessie. Again, one could fly from Lalibela to Addis. Although we loved the drives and there were always interesting things along the way, if you want to cut down on any time, this is where I would do it. Neither Mekele nor Dessie are very memorable.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
We tended to stay in quite large hotels which I am sure were all locally owned. Plus they were fully staffed by local people. All the guides in each site/town/village were born and bred in that place. Haptamu took us to a Fair Chain coffee supplier where the proceeds are spread even more widely than in Fair Trade production. Ethiopia is still very unprepared for tourism which on the one hand was wonderful for us, but I think if managed carefully with better conservation practice and sensitive product development, there could be a lot more local impact.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

The Simeon Mountains where we were lucky enough to see 5 Ibex in one day with our wonderful interesting guide Desu ( who knew to much about the flora & fauna of the country as he was born there!) and the Bale Mountains were we spent a very lovely afternoon walking through the forest with a guide Hussain and saw so many animals Nyala, Reedbuck, Bushbuck and Wort hogs. All the animals were so close to us and it was a really fabulous time. Raphael was also a very good guide in the Axum area and we so enjoyed seeing Yaha which was such an important place 2000 years agon and we were lucky enough to meet the German and the Italian archeologists who were working on site and told us so much2. Go with an open mind and do not expect wonderful hotels.The four of us found it a fascinating, mind broadening and sometimes humbling experience rather than as a vacation but we do say go and have a look and appreciate an interesting very ancient country that is now very poor. The people are wonderful and help make the country so good. We had three weeks of traveling around Ethiopia with at least five internal flights within the country so we tried to cover the country which is simply VAST. There were many days of long drives over rough roads but the drivers, 4 wheel drive cars and the guides were absolutely first rate.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes, that is what we intended to do rather than book through a UK ATOL and ABTA company when all the money goes to that company and not to the people of the country that you are visiting. During the three weeks we must have given employment to all the guides, the drivers, the hotels, and the people who work in those hotels. Our visits to the Simeon and the Bale mountains certainly benefited the National Parks and our entry fee had already been paid by Eskinder as he had paid for all the entry fees to all the sites.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

From start to end, we were so well taken care of by our guides and drivers. A varied itinerary covering a wide variety of stunning landscapes, meeting wonderful people and the highlight, being there to experience it all during the Orthodox Christian Easter celebrations.2. This went above and beyond all expectations. Such warm, beautiful people everywhere that we went. We ate well, saw and experienced incredible things: all wonderful. Visiting the Dannakil region - a hot mix of volcanoes and tribal people eeking out a living from the harsh environment. Memories that will last a lifetime.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Ethiopia is a vast country with lovely people. We were always promptly met and greeted. Be patient on the varied English skills -- and try and check out what the tipping protocol is. Also research the weather carefully before deciding what to pack - we took too much warm stuff. The U.K. Government advises against travel to the Dannakil. We were very well looked after, with a police and armed escort. Having a friendly local guide who knows the locals meant we felt very safe. Eskinder is always on hand by phone (great mobile network nearly everywhere) and will help out with anything. We found Ethiopian airlines good - planes, staff and security. Use Eskinder to sort out local flights - it is much better value and will mean you get to see more of the country in the time you have.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
The large network of guides who are mainly self employed, and used by the vacation provider helps the locals. Entrance fees supports both the churches and the Simien region. We were worried about the drought but can see that many areas have sufficient water and plenty of food.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Difficult to choose - so many and varied sites and experiences. The palace in Gondor, the stelae in Axum, the awesome views and baboons in the Simien mountains, the amazing historic engineering of the rock churches, the simplicity of the rural farming - All enriching to behold.2. It's really difficult to say. I think it was the range of things we saw and learnt about. Obviously the three days we spent in Lalibela over Timket were extraordinary - but so was watching our guide in Harar negotiate for a can of camel milk in a local village. To lengthen rather than shorten your holiiday Make sure you keep your baggage locked at all times. Be aware that in isolated lodges (where that is the only place to eat), such as the one in the Simien mountains, the prices are understandably much higher than elsewhere.3. There are lots to choose from. For me it was a day spent climbing to rock churches in the Tigrai area. For my husband it was the churches in Lalibela. A couple of the tribal visits in the South were uncomfortable as it felt that the tribes were altering their way of life to get money from tourists, but others were excellent with tourist income used to make improvements for the whole of the community. This was an incredible vacation. It was beautifully planned, by our agent, who planned every detail with precision and wisdom. The places we stayed were excellent, and the entire itinerary, designed specifically to our needs, was wonderful. We were able to see an enormous amount in the brief period of time we had. Each day brought something new--ruins, antiquities, baboons, remarkable rock churches, beautiful landscapes, centuries old paintings,, etc, etc. I would recommend this vacation to anyone, and I think Americans should learn about Ethiopia, which is really a terrific vacation destination; it is not publicized enough, with the result that people don't think of it as anything but the place that had a famine thirty years ago. I particularly want to compliment our agent, who combined intensive attention to every detail with a vision of Ethiopia and an under standing of tourists needs. 1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
I visited Ethiopia thanks to an inspirational article I was sent about half a year back about the rock-hewn churches of Tigray. I was not disappointed when I visited them, but for me the highlight of the trip was trekking in the Simien mountains. I would heartily endorse anyone who is physically able to undertake this journey of 2-8 days with a credible tour company (suggest Eskinder). Although my tent living conditions were not 5 star, the experience was. My guide, scout and especially the cook were wonderful. I had better food on this trek than in any of the restaurants I visited in the 10 days in Ethiopia.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Be prepared for less than luxurious accommodations. Ethiopia is spectacular but its infrastructure for good plumbing, electricity, Western food, hot water etc. is lacking. I'd suggest you always have a head lamp for additional light. Light is particularly poor in many hotels and restaurants even when there is electricity.3. Absolutely. In each locale, my operators had to engage local guides (a new government regulation). When trekking, we had local scouts, mule handlers, cooks etc. There is a very clear understanding that impact on the environment should be minimal and tourism should benefit the local populations.4. I had a wonderful trip and I was especially pleased with the service provided by Eskinder Hailu Sebeta. Traveling alone as a woman in my mid sixties, I naturally had security concerns. Eskinder answered every email immediately and provided accurate information. He was trustworthy and reliable.
