1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
It was all memorable - from beginning to end but I think I would say taking the train as our mode of travel, enabling us to really see the moors and mountains.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Pack lightly. A few sweaters and long pants will do just fine (for an April visit). Bring a rain jacket also; we only needed ours one day but good to have on hand.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
I feel yes, we benefited the local businesses. Traveling by train I hope reduced environmental impacts - I feel it did.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

The friendly, helpful people. The scenery and the food.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Make sure you stay two nights in each place and we did extra in Edinburgh and Glasgow as well.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Definitely benefited local people, supported the community and helped families keep their homes and estates. Using the public transport ie: planes and buses helped the environment rather than using a car rental. We learned a lot about conservation of land, forests etc, on the trip.4. 1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
The journey from Glasgow to Spean Bridge was so scenic and although long, the time just passed. The Old Pines was lovely and the evening meal exceptional. Fort William to Mallaig on the Jacobite steam train was another beautiful journey. We loved the Isle of Skye and were so lucky with the weather and the full day sightseeing with Donald was a highlight. The View Field hotel was fabulous. Craigatin House in Pitlochry was lovely. All transfers worked well.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
Skye was fantastic and the weather was very kind, we thought Viewfield House ticked all the boxes, it was trying to be environmentally friendly, trying to encourage guests to separate recyclable and non recyclable rubbish in rooms, it had multi use shampoo and conditioner in rooms and similar for jam and marmalade at breakfast. Milk was provided in an insulated flask in the bedroom which we though was inspirational - no plastic!! The owners/hosts were charming and came to meet guests at breakfast and were very charming and down to earth and their staff seemed very happy in their work.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Its a full on vacation and you live out of your suitcase. It can involve a lot of walking as you only really have one full day in each place. Book a hotel in Edinburgh before you start and one in Glasgow when you finish the trip. We chose Barony House in Edinburgh which was run by an Australian family, the renovation of the property was superb, breakfast were fantastic and the host Paul was a typical brash Aussie! In Edinburgh ww chose The Alamo which was on the West of the City amongst numerous record and music shops, very bohemian and close to the the University and Free Museums. We preferred Glasgow to Edinburgh so its definitely worth the stop over. Old Pines Hotel is a glorious location, the food is fantastic but we felt very unwelcome at this hotel which is a great shame as it was probably our favourite from food and location perspective, but the staff and owner simply did not want to engage and it is not somewhere we would return to. We found it very impersonal. You definitely need to book restaurants in advance. We did and even then we could only get meals in some locations at 5.30pm. We saw numerous people being turned away from restaurants when they did not have bookings.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
We pondered whilst we were away what the environmental criteria were. At Moyness House in Inverness we did not really see any efforts towards environment or conservation - everything was in plastic sachets (milk, sauces, butter, jams, etc.) - and the host told us he bought from Morrisons/Tesco. We are pleased that the trip supported local independent hotels but feel there needs to be stricter criteria around this to qualify what 'green' or 'environmentally friendly' is. We loved our day trip on Skye, but it made us realise what an impact that was having on the area. Everywhere we stopped the car parks were full and we were one of many getting out of the vehicle, walking to the particular landmark, taking photos, and then walking back to the vehicle. A path to and from the landmarks is being eroded away. The guide told us how tourism in Skye had increased massively - this is good for their economy but cannot be good for the environment/landmarks. We appreciate this is the only way to see everything in such a short space of time, so we're not sure what the answer is! Maybe some sort of walking tour, but obviously that wouldn't suit all visitors.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
It was a very interesting experience, I would be the driver if we had travelled by car and I would therefore have missed a lot of the spectacular scenery on the train especially from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh and from Malaig to Fort William. The trains worked very well and we would definitely use this mode of transport again for a vacation. The Jacobite train disappointed a bit, we could not find any officials to guide us, the on board catering looked very tired and the app was the only way to find out about our seating arrangements. The train does not stop on the viaduct so difficult to get photos and no commentary of where we were or what to see. I did a similar journey on the Rocky Mountaineer in Canada where travelers are made to feel very special and there is an open car to stand in and get stunning photos. I suspect in most locations there is only one train a day so departure and arrival is very restricted. Arrival in Pitlochry at 15:20 and Inverness and 15:23 leaves very little time to do anything and John at Moyness House does not receive guests until 4.30pm which we did not know until we arrived on the doorstep and he wasn't in, and left us with a wasted afternoon!Chris Saunders review 22 Jun 2021
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
Tour of Isle of Skye with it’s wonderful scenery- quite spectacular.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Travel light. If you’re going in the Summer, keep covered - the midges are out to get you. If Inverness is on you itinerary do eat at the Tiger on the Wall restaurant - fantastic Indian curry house, not at all like the run of the mill kind. Also look around the Botanical Gardens - beautifully laid out and with a great selection of plants, also has a good cafe with a terrace overlooking the gardens.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
We used public transport wherever possible and ate locally sourced vegan or vegetarian food.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
For us this has been a unique experience. We travelled up on the Caledonian sleeper and had some relaxing train journeys through beautiful countryside. Our first vacation in the UK for many years and very rewarding.David Lomita review 28 Sep 2021
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
Isle of Skye. Part of that was luck as we did a tour with an amazing guide with a good group. And we had a fascinating cab driver for a long ride. Other good parts but that was the most fun.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Don't do it without changing the itinerary. We spent 2 full days in Pitlochry, a town that maybe merited a 4 hour stopover. At another stop the hosts' hospitality was extolled but we arrived during dinner service and were out 16 hours later so we hardly experienced it.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Have no idea4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Good, maybe even very good but the issues mentioned above in question 2, and a colossal, incomprehensibly inept screw-up by British Airways, prevents me from saying great. I'm going to give it 4 stars but 3 1/2 stars would more accurately express our opinionAnne Roberts review 21 Sep 2021

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
The spectacular rail journeys. The two wonderful hotels on Skye and at Spean Bridge. The Skye tour.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
We felt that the time in Inverness was too long and the time on Skye was disappointingly short. One day less in Inverness and one more inb Skye would have made all the difference. Can this be fed back? If you are doing the rail trip the public transport provisions in Pitlochery are few and far between. There are also only limited taxi companies which made doing anything outside of the town difficult.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes, All the hotels and the tours were provided by local people. We were very happy with this aspect of the trip.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
It was a good trip and we enjoyed it. It could have been improved as the comments above suggest.Read the operator's response here:

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
All the train journeys were memorable but the favorite was the trip from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh - weather was beautiful and scenery stunning. All of the accommodations were very good and interesting in their own way and food provided quite delicious - they certainly know where to send their clients. We go to Scotland for the scenery and for us the west coast around Arisaig was memorable partly because of re-living previous vacations in this area. We had a taxi/guide (Laurie Lowrie) who told us much about the history of the area and also stopped by a remote locally known spot where we were able to take photos of the Jacobite steam train on its way to Mallaig - quite an unexpected pleasure!2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Take as little luggage as possible. Some of the accommodation involved climbing stairs (no lift) - e.g.The Place, Edinburgh was a climb but very well worth it! Otherwise just trust all the arrangements made by the operator and enjoy a relaxing time - all transfers and accommodation were exactly as described in the information sent to us.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
We were pleased to hear that local people were employed in some of the hotels / B&B. Most places provided soap / shampoo / etc in fixed containers so no waste of lots of little plastic bottles. In most cases the meals had been cooked with some local ingredients e.g fish from Mallaig and vegetables grown on the premises.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
It was every bit as relaxing and interesting as we hoped for. The weather was ideal, which helped enormously, but in most places there were books / games available so even if we had been rained off we would have had something to do! Every one we met was so welcoming and helpful and so the friendliness of the Scots will continue to be remembered.Ralph Lobatto review 29 Sep 2019

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
We were well taken care of by everyone involved in the West Highland Line to Skye vacation. Loved the Jacobite Steam Train first trip in first class! We had a private tour guide (Peggy) on Skye who said "Where would you like to go?" The lovely B&B on Skye was in a beautiful, peaceful location on the coast. We took a long walk through the farmland and were gifted with a picture perfect rainbow hovering over the coastal lighthouse. Every detail went smoothly.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
We were not aware that this was not a group tour and that we were on our own to find our way. Given this, the operator understood our surprise and because of construction at the Glasgow train station as well as our appearing a bit nervous about getting the right train, they kindly had one of their staff meet us at our Glasgow accommodation and accompany us to the train station to make sure we knew the ropes! We were so grateful. But there was no need to be concerned since every detail was clearly spelled out, we were met at each stop and were well taken care of.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Hard to know, but surely we stayed in locally owned accommodations and our guide on Skye was a local family owned operation. We had meals in the B&B's and shopped in small local shops, visited a small locally owned distillery shop and visited a gallery supporting a Scottish artist.4. The hikes we did in the Highlands, food was wonderful at the Bed & Breakfasts2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
As others have said, keep the luggage to a minimum. Makes it easy on the trains. Some trains had reserved seating. Other trains don't (even if your seat number is noted). The operator did a nice job of getting our seats together for a family of four.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Definitely benefited locals with the use of B+B's instead of chain hotels. Use of the train instead of cars decreased the environmental impact. But we still felt the need to rent a care in a couple locations in order to get to some sites.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Book a tour with a professional tour guide. Don't drive through this very busy area yourself in a rented car.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
We went on the Isle of Skye tour in a small tour bus that carried seven people. If most people did this, it would reduce the number of private sedans on the road being driven by inexperienced drivers. We were so happy to have a tour guide who lives in highlands. Our tour guide's name was Roderick and he was a highly qualified guide from the local area.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
The Isle of Skye with its variety of scenery was the most memorable. The B & B, Craigatin House, at Pitlochry was outstanding - in fact we enjoyed every moment in this town.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Weather plays a big part in the enjoyment of this vacation. Constant rain can make the travel unpleasant.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes, all the accommodation we stayed at promoted environmental ideals. However, out in the open air not everybody is so concerned with graffiti and rubbish often in evidence.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
It was an excellent vacation enhanced by good planning for connections and transfers which made for no stress. Although train seats were reserved, none were available. It was a bit of a free for all when boarding trains.Georgia Marshall review 5 Nov 2018
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
I visited four countries, three were new to me, and the highlight was the wonderful train trip around Scotland. I love trains and where I live in Idaho there are no trains! This trip was organized by a company who is part of Responsible Travel's network. I definitely would use them again if I decide to go to Ireland next year. All the small, locally owned hotels were great, the people were friendly and helpful. Also, we met so many interesting and nice people on the trains.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Again, contact the tour company to help you with booking your hotels, trains, taxis and anything else you need. Let them know what you want to see and do and they will map it all out for you.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Absolutely! The locally owned hotels and B&Bs were so nice and enjoyable. I'm trying to think of any suggestions to improve this trip, but I can't think of a thing.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
It was exceptional. I've given the name of Responsible Travel to a number of people I met on this trip as a company they should definitely look into before their next adventure. I found Responsible Travel simply by googling "train trips around Scotland." Thank you for such a great time.Tim Hellings review 25 Oct 2018

If you are either traveling to/from London or spending time before or after your train excursion exploring the UK, then consider buying a Britrail Pass and asking for a credit for the train part of the fee. We did that and it saved us substantially.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The great way to travel, by train!! So relaxing and we met great people. Then we got to spend time on our own at the different stops. Unlike a bus tour where you must go to specific places and be back at a specific time, we were able to explore the towns on our terms. Accommodations were varied and clean with great service and food. Put all that in the beauty of Scotland and your have the perfect trip!!2. Too many things to list! The overall beauty of Scotland was awesome. The Isle of Skye hotel had a great restaurant and pub. The Blair Athol Castle in Pitlochry was really special. We rode the bus from our hotel; which was easy, economical and efficient.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
The people of Scotland were warm and welcoming which surprised us a bit. The land is beautiful in its own way and well worth a tour but not the most scenic we have visited.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Really do not recommend the Scottish rail system. No one pays any attention to the idea some travelers have reserved seats and locals just take any seat seat reserved or not. There is a critical lack of storage space for luggage of any size. It is difficult to determine what car you should be in and always having to ask people to vacate your seat is uncomfortable.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Hard to say but we were very impressed with their efforts to to recycle waste and the country sides were free of litter. We did our best to leave no trace.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
It was well organized but the written dialogue could have been better and warnings about train travel in Scotland would have you better prepared for its rigors. Glad we made the trip but would do it differently next time.Donna Fahey review 14 May 2018

Many thanks for your comments. We are delighted you enjoyed the trip. We pride ourselves on building long-term relationships with locally owned businesses, for accommodation, taxis and guides, to ensure that the benefits of tourism are enjoyed directly in the local area. This helps to create a sustainable economy in remote rural places with positive impact on the community.

Skye is stunning and the trip on the Jacobite Express was a lovely afternoon.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Try to travel as light as possible since luggage allowances are not generous on most Scotrail trains. At any time of year layers are advisable when traveling in Scotland as the weather can be unpredictable. Sturdy footwear is advisable if you want to do any walking in Skye as even main paths can become very muddy after rain.3. Very enjoyable, it was excellent and exiting, a tad expensive. Sadly the most expensive hotel on Skye, for which we had to pay a supplement, was the least best with very expensive food of not excellent quality, the bar food was in a shabby bar and twice the price it should have been. At breakfast an extra piece of bacon, after the one served, cost £1.50 ! The rooms were soulless and uncared for, though clean, lots of climbing stairs, bedroom upstairs, loo downstairs. But it was a stunning view.Derrick Horne review 2 Jun 2017

Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes very much4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
It was very enjoyable and I recommend it for train enthusiasts. Although accommodation places were first class (comfortable good food etc & excellent views etc we would have preferred accommodation on Skye in walking distance to Armadale one closer to the township of Pitlochary of Pitlocary.Valerie Deunk review 24 Jun 2015
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
We could not decide - the friendly people we encountered everywhere, the lovely accomodation booked for us, some of which also had fine dining for evening meals, the ease of train travel in Scotland, the rental car and the fun of driving for the first time on the other side of the road on Isle of Skye, and finally the amazingly beautiful vistas in the Highlands. Like "heaven on earth" - I had always dreamed of visiting Scotland but no photo can do justice to the beauty of the green hills, rugged mountains and the livestock everywhere. Tiny tea houses, scones, seafood, lamb, beef, beer and wine. Sampling Scotch Whiskey and Haggas... We loved it all.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
We were thankful that we just had carry-on luggage for ease of hopping off and on trains and buses. Layers of clothing are needed to accomodate to the changing weather - we were told and do believe that there is no bad weather in Scotland, just bad wardrobe choices!! Save shopping for large wouvenirs til the end of the tour, or have items (such as pottery from Uig on Isle of Skye) shipped.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
We were aware that the Scotland in general and certainly smaller centers rely on tourism to maintain their grand old manor houses and castles. We saw evidence of efforts to be "green" throughout - both in the city and moreso out in the countryside.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Cant' say enough about how much we appreciated the arrangements made for us by the operator - to be able to see so much of the country and yet enjoy a wonderful stress-free vacation - Simply ONE OF THE BEST vacations that I have every been on...I will give 4 stars only because I have had some lovely vacations in Africa and in Europe with my family - each one was the best !! But trip was much more enjoyable than I could have dreamed of.Anthony Watts review 28 Sep 2014
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
The way everything that was listed in the very detailed itinerary happened exactly as stated.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Try to travel as light as possible3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
We stayed at several hotels and guest houses also went on 4 excursions so all these benefitted local people. All travel was by train so apart from transfers from train to accommodation and back our environmental impact was very low.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
A wonderful experienceMichael Rose review 8 Jul 2014
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
Train journeys and particularly the West Highland Line. Enjoyed the drive round Skye though would have preferred to hire a car (too old at 77 according to the three companies we tried)2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Spend more time on Skye and possibly Spean Bridge or wherever a person's interests show more to see. We were not just traveling for the train journeys.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Jobs to locals, saved cars on the roads etc4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
Possibly our stay at Killiecrankie Hotel, although whole experience was memorable2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Make sure you book the taxi driver for a half day tour in Skye, the bus service is very erratic !3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
I hope so, traveling by train and local buses instead of by car when able makes far more sense.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Excellent vacation with wonderful hotels and superb organization, the sun followed us around Scotland ! Only very slight comment would be on the restaurant menu in Skye which is both very expensive and limited, but the pub is good !!Staff in Skye need to take lessons from the wonderful service elsewhere, particularly @killiecrankie hotel where we were met after an evening at the theatre with an umbrella and kept bar open for us to have a drink to take to the bedroom to watch the Workd Cup !Holiday Reviews
