Go with the flow and enjoy a vacation that you can flex to whatever you want from it.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Seeing dolphins and whales in their natural habitat.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Be prepared to be flexible as trips can be cancelled or rearranged if the weather/sea conditions are unfavourable.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Definitely benefitted local people. There were marine biologists working for the company who where doing research into marine conservation. I think you have to accept that any vacation is going to have an environmental impact. However the hotel we stayed in was trying really hard to be green.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Brilliant!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Whale and dolphin watching closely followed by Terra Nostra at Furnace and the view at Sete Cidades and generally exploring Ponta Delgada, especially the parks

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

You don’t need a big coat from the UK, a lightweight waterproof will do - saves on your packing! You can get by easily using contactless bank cards but a little cash in euros is useful for small shopping items.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

A tricky question in some ways! It looks like tourism is growing fast in the Azores, I hope the number of tourists is capped to preserve the high quality of the natural environment and resources; our guide to Sete Cidades said the numbers of people visiting were booked in to prevent too many on the mountain and small roads which is good to know. Whale watching tours are ran by staff with relevant marine biology qualifications as well as excellent language skills, they kept a respectful distance to the whales etc we went to watch, always approaching from the rear of family groups which was good. The hotel was very good.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

10/10 excellent

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Weather can change quickly, take 'layers' and a good raincoat. Some research before your vacation to make the most of your stay, book your favourite restaurants to ensure availability.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I believe so, We spent money with locally based companies including family restaurants, taxi firms and attractions, so hopefully this income was of benefit

We had a wonderful time from arrival to departure, would not have changed a thing. Definately 5 stars plus!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

All of the guides on our excursions were extremely well informed and very patient and hardworking.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

I would advise them where to find meals, as this was always a challenge for us.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I hope so. We paid for the trip as a whole, so I don’t know how much local people were paid. We were driving around in vehicles, but we couldn’t have gotten around the island otherwise, and we were careful to minimize our impact on the environment.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Excellent

review 11 May 2023

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Seeing and being able to photograph a blue whale

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Remember wildlife is unpredictable as is the weather. Be aware that humidity especially at this time of year can be high so bring plenty of spare clothes as drying wet ones can be very difficult. Also sea conditions can make it unsafe to go out so don't set expectations too high everything is weather dependent.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The manner in which we observed the cetaceans helped the conservation of cetacecans. The whale watching company certainly operated within the marine code for observation, unfortunately the same cannot be said of another unrealted boat operator. Eating locally helped build the local economy and benefited the local people.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Excellent - need I say more! Gald you didn't ask me to rate the weather! The guides and local staff contacts were really helpful and patient especially when coping with the fallout from the adverse weather conditions, which according to some were the worst they seen for a continuous period.

review 10 May 2023

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Seeing a blue whale and juvenile fairly close and for 10 or more minutes

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Pray for good weather, we were not lucky.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Benefit local people, yes, restaurants, whale research, staff running the boats etc. etc.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

All concerned made every effort to make it work for us.

review 11 Apr 2023

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

I saw a blue whale!!

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Don't bother booking trips to other places on the island - hire a car and explore it yourself!

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Paying to go whale watching helped the marine biologists to collect important data for monitoring cetaceans so in that case, yes. For reducing environmental impacts however, any flights negate that, and the boats were diesel engine.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

It was a truly wonderful experience.

Read the operator's response here:

Dear Ben So glad you had such a wonderful experience with exceptional sightings at sea. You suggested people rent cars and explore the island. Yes that is an option but as the roads are small and parking at popular spots is limited, a lot of cars on the road can cause traffic problems ( already happening in high season ) and also is not very environmentally friendly. Ponta Delgada has tiny narrow cobbled streets and no parking so driving in the city is difficult. Our tours in the mini van mean one vehicle on the road for 8-12 people rather than 4-6 cars. The tour guides give excellent info and take you to special places most tourists do not know about!!

review 26 Jun 2023

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The were many parts of my vacation that I enjoyed but the 3 half days out in the boat, for dolphin and Whale watching was the best. On day one I saw a Humpback Whale, Bottle nosed Dolphins and Common Dolphins. On day two and three, I saw pods of the above dolphins, as well as a pod (around 12) of Altantic Spotted dolphins!

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Be prepared for changeable weather, so pack a little bit of everything and if you love seafood, you will not be disappointed.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

My vacation benefited local people, in terms of tourism bringing money to Sao Miguel. However, I felt there was a lot of expectation for people to buy bottled water, which meant a lot of empty plastic bottles in recycling bins, rather than people re-using them. Also, conserving the beauty of the hot springs at Furnas, should be considered, as it did look like taking one big communal bath.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

It was a wonderful experience, as I got to sea marine life, as nature intended and the walking trails gave me time and space to enjoy my surroundings and the beauty of Sao Miguel.

review 12 Jun 2023

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

We were really spoilt with the variety of wildlife, I lost count of the amount of sperm whales and calfs we saw. There were also 4 species of dolphins, a sei whales, turtles, a sunfish, flying fish and most memorably, I was particularly lucky to see 4 fin whales on my birthday.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

For any vegans, we definitely benefited from having a self catering apartment where we could cook our own food. Our tour leader Amanda did a great job at arranging options for us for our group meals but you won't find too many options while out and about available on Pico without some real effort. It was also good to have an apartment for our own washing machine and heater with clothes dryer so we didn't need to pack too many boat - friendly outfits (although the boat trip provider, Futurismo does supply extra big waterproofs that fit over your clothes if you need them). The upgrade to a balcony apartment was definitely worth it for chilling out with a nice glass if wine and a mountain view.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We had a couple of visits to local craftspeople and the opportunity to buy from them, to hear about local history and sample some traditional food and wine - which was excellent. The boat trips, while clearly the only way to see ocean wildlife, did ultimately raise some issues for us about where the balance lies between providing an exciting tourist experience and respecting the animals. A tricky one for all wildlife vacation providers, and not a criticism of Responsible Travel. It would be interesting to know how much tourism money feeds in to conservation research/work.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Overall we had an incredible experience with the wildlife, our bonus day on land exploring the caves and vineyards also added to a well rounded trip of the island.

Read the operator's response here:

Thanks for your feedback and so happy you had such wonderful encounters at sea and enjoyed the Island. Yes vegan food is available but limited. Sao Miguel Island has 2 vegan restaurants now. We give about 5% of vacation payment towards conservation and research. The presentation and Q&A with the whale researchers received donations to their work from us. Best wishes

review 1 Jun 2023

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Just one is hard but we did see orcas on one of the whale watching trips.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Get as much information as possible before you go especially about getting around. Use the, in our case, very helpful hotel staff to help with booking trips/taxis.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes local people benefit from tourist industry but are keen to keep the balance between tourism and the natural environment. Don’t think it reduced environmental impacts but whale watching was responsibly managed to avoid disturbing the animals. Also you learn a lot about animals and the island as you travel around which makes you appreciative of the natural beauty of the island.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Loved the beautiful places we saw. People who live here are friendly and helpful.

review 18 May 2023

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Seeing a blue whale mum and her calf.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Take sea sickness tablets before you board and take more layers to keep you warm than you think you'll need. We knew this having worked on boats but some passengers on the trip didn't know this.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I think the company are an excellent organisation, employing lots of bright local young people. I was really impressed with their efficiency and friendliness - top marks for that. However I think where they could improve is in their interaction with Cetaceans at sea. I've worked on many scientific studies of whales at sea and some of the zodiac drivers were on occasion getting too close and surrounding cetaceans. It's just a small adjustment. Overall they were pretty good and the catamaran captain was very good.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Great. Loved the Azores. Whale tours were lovely. We did one of the land tours...it was fine but a bit touristy for us so we decided to not go on the second tour. The only real grumble was with our hotel room...the hotel was lovely and I had paid for an upgrade to a slightly nicer hotel but the room we were given was at the very top of the building tucked under the eaves with no view. Given that we stayed for 5 nights I think we earned a better room..so that was very disappointing. Hence the 4 rather than 5 star review

Read the operator's response here:

Hi Nicola Thanks your for your review and so glad you really enjoyed the vacation and the sightings of Blue whale mother and calf....amazing and give hope for survival of the species. I am sorry the room in your upgrade hotel did not have views. If you had got in touch with us, we could certainly have tried to find an alternative room either in that hotel or another. We are happy to help to make the vacation special in every way for you and other guests. Kind regards Amanda

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Seeing a female jump back whale breaching 6 x and then two blue whale swimming side by side

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

The company are excellent at the whale spotting planning and are knowledgable. Bring an easy lightweight waterproof

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

It was a superb break and we really felt that we could get away from it all

review 9 May 2023

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Seeing a blue whale mother and her calf close up on our final day.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Be aware that there may not be many whales around. (We thought that the Azores were a major stopping point in the migration route and that there would be quite a few whales around, with reasonable certainty of seeing whales. We were surprised that it was so uncertain.) For bird-watching and nature conservation, Ana Mendoça was superb. We very much liked Hotel do Colegio.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Whale watching helped to end whale killing. But they must be careful not to allow too many boats in the same place at the same time, and need to enforce rules about not getting too close to the whales. More explication about the whales would have been welcome on the boat.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Very enjoyable, and satisfactory because we did see whales. But the risk of not seeing any was much greater than we realised beforehand.

review 22 Nov 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Seeing a blue whale mother and calf! Easily one of the best wildlife experiences of our lives and something we'll never forget.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Try and rent a car and spend a few days exploring the island - the non whale stuff is also excellent and the island is stunning.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, the whale tour operators was a very responsibly run company, employing local people. They also displayed a much greater respect for the whales than other companies we saw.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

10/10 - we were very unlucky with the weather and had multiple trips cancelled, but it was still phenomenal, seeing a blue whale makes any trip 5 stars in my eyes!

review 9 Oct 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Seeing the whales and going to Furnas.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

To book a couple of dolphin and whale trips as we saw dolphins the first time and whales the second time.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, I am not sure what environmental impact we reduced. I thought the whale watching operator very knowledgeable, and supported conservation.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Excellent, a good mixture of tours and relaxation. Time to go to the beach. I loved staying at Porta Delgado, lovely restaurants, remember to book as the best ones are full.

review 8 Jul 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

We stayed in Furnas, at the Terra Nostra Garden hotel - the gardens are amazing and well worth the time to explore. Then we moved to Ponta Delgada for the rest of the vacation, to take some trips out to see and in jeeps. The trips in search of whales and dolphins were extremely good and I doubt they ever have a trip where they don't find something to see. Over the course of three trips, we saw five species of dolphin, at one point being in amongst a huge group feeding on a shoal of fish, with birds diving in as well, and on our last trip out saw pilot whales and the islands resident sperm whales. Mission accomplished!

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

If you're taking trips out to sea, remember a hat, a coat, and your sun cream - the sun is brutal on the water and even on a warm day, the boats turn on the speed. If you're looking for places to eat in Ponta Delgada, take notice of the reviews as some of the eateries are not that great, but equally there are a few amazing restaurants, such as Michel's, Casa Marisca, Sao Pedro, and the A Terra in the Octant Hotel.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I'm so impressed by how clean Sao Miguel is, we saw road crews cleaning and cutting back greenery, and everything seemed to be looked after well. I'm not sure about environmental impacts, but we were told about varous projects going on which prove that the Azores take conservation seriously. It seems the whale watching boats also observe and take photos to improve knowledge and awareness of the sealife around the island. And the restaurants all serve local produce, whcih is extremely good.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Definitely a five star vacation. If we go back, it would be to see different species of cetacean visiting at another time of the year, and we would probably choose a different hotel in Ponta Delgada - but still spend a few days at Furnas for the gardens and the thermal pools. Yes, five stars.

review 13 Jun 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The privilege of viewing whales and dolphins at sea as a guest in their territory.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Take some time to see the island, there are amazing places to visit and discover why Sao Miguel is called “The Green Island”. Easy to hire a car or take a guided tour.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Tourism is undoubtedly the most valuable income for the Azores, it provides employment for many and it was particularly important following two years of covid. The local people were without exception welcoming, helpful and extremely friendly, from bus drivers to shopkeepers to people in the street happy to give directions to tourists looking lost. It’s as if the whole island has been on a courtesy course, it was absolutely lovely. The boat trips take great care not to crowd the animals they are watching and keep a good distance, conserving the environment for the animals.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Fabulous experience, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit and would like to return to one or some of the smaller islands in the future.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

An amazing few days

review 5 Jun 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

This was a fabulous vacation. My adult son and I shared an apartment at the Antilia Hotel and it worked brilliantly. We each had our own space and the Hotel was central to everything we needed. The highlight of our trip was seeing a pod of 16+ sperm whales which was amazing and being in the rib added to the excitement. We were there in May/early June and everyone we met seemed to be like minded and great fun to be with.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Be prepared that whilst the sea can look calm , once you leave the harbour it can be really rough. The advice given is worth taking seriously. Try different restaurants- it is reasonably priced and if you can try to see some of the viewpoints. Be prepared for rain

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Definitely yes- having marine biologists on board was great - they have incredible knowledge and we experienced first hand the fact that the animals come first. The local economy relies on tourism

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

The Azores is stunning. It felt clean, safe with some breathtaking scenery and fabulous food. We would definitely return

review 15 May 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The whole vacation was wonderful but the rib trips to see the whales and dolphins was the most memorable and magical part of my vacation and also to share the experience with like minded people, the whole group were lovely. Rui our guide was phenomenal, his passion and knowledge of the cetaceans shone through all week and the crew on the rib were fantastic too, both knowledgeable and engaging. We saw fin whales, sei whales, sperm whales, a humpback whale, common, striped, risso and bottlenose dolphins, loggerhead turtle and flying fish!

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Just book this vacation, you won't be disappointed. Although we did not see the blue whales, we came very close, but bad weather halted our search, but I felt very privileged to have seen all the other cetaceans and wildlife that we saw.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I think because Pico Island is not touristy at all, I think any money spent whether it be on the boat trips, the local cafes, restaurants or shops, definitely supported the local people and conservation because the money was not benefitting big national companies and conglomerates where the local people and environments do not benefit. I was also impressed with the boat operator as they would always give any animals that we came across the space and respect they deserved.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

For me the whole vacation was a dream come true. It was so well organised from the initial booking, to the booking of flights to the vacation itself and as a solo traveler that gave me peace of mind. So thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone involved! I look forward to my next trip!

review 15 May 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Seeing blue whales! We saw 3 resident species of dolphin, several resident sperm whales and 2 blues over the week.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

The marine mammals are amazing but you should also tour the island if you can - it takes your breath away!

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Tourism is very important to the Azores and the last 2 years has affected livelihoods, so yes to taking your tourist dollar to be spent here in local businesses and tour companies. All air travel has environmental impact but your smaller choices as in where to stay and how to make greener choices like considering staying longer and flying less are something to consider. I’d have liked more education (on the shared vessel) in how passengers can support cetacean conservation like small steps to reduce your carbon footprint, avoid single use plastics etc so that all passengers, including those on short excursions or from cruise ships might gain more awareness of threats to marine mammals and what WE can do to take action. The local tour company carries out research which is shared in academic papers and studies; and they share findings and data with global academics, this adding to the bodies of knowledge about cetaceans. Their research supports conservation and informs their tours.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Very memorable. A stunning island with amazing marine life. I’d love to come back!

review 8 May 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Seeing the whales swimming in their natural habitat

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Don't fixate on seeing a particular animal. Look for what turns up.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The local economy benefitted from our expenditure while there. The whales were visibly unmoved by our presence and some of what we spent on the vacation supports the local firm's research.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

It was a totally relaxing, fascinating vacation.

review 17 Sep 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Seeing Dolphins and Whales close up.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Probably go earlier in the year, say May/ June.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, company respects the wildlife and does not get too close to the whales.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Staff on the boat very professional, informative and friendly. Hotel good, clean and ideally situated. Communications all round excellent. Ponta Delgada not so geared up for tourists as expected.

review 4 Jun 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Enjoyed it all. Being at sea, exploring the island and talking with local people and those who had family roots there.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

I think the Idea of a whale extravaganza was misleading. We did see a lot of sperm whales and dolphins which was great but they are resident in these waters. It seems migrating whales would have been earlier in April or maybe later in the summer.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I believe it benefited local people from tourism. However I think if anything the impact will add more stress on the environment and infrastructure of the island. I was told tourism had only been since 2011 so needs to develop carefully or could over run the island.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

I enjoyed it . Would say 4 stars.

Read the operator's response here:

Many thanks for taking the time to write a good review and I am so glad that you had such an enjoyable vacation . It was really good to read your comments and hear of your sightings and how much you enjoyed the Island. The migrating whales tend to pass thru from late March thru to early June and the peak statistically is the first 2 weeks in May. We did not use the word “extravaganza” but the arrival of theOcean giants is a very special time and there are many sightings, I am sorry you were unlucky and glad you saw alot of sperm whales Wishing you many more experiences that are satisfying in the future and may your wonderful memories stay with you for a long time.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Thanks for your wonderful review and so glad you had a great time despite being unlucky with the weather! The kind of sightings and the amount of time at sea is controlled by the weather and sea conditions so yes, guests do have to be prepared for that! However the island is stunning and so even though you took less trips to sea, you did get to enjoy the island tours.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Seeing a pod of around 100 dolphins

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

If you go in April, take a few warmer clothes. The wind was quite chilly plus it was always windy!

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

By eating in local restaurants I hope we had some positive impact on local tradespeople. There does seem to be a limit on the number of boats out whale watching, and I hope that remains. It mustn't end up with hundreds out there whizzing around in sear of wildlife. I hope the Azores government continues to restrict it.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Good, but not outstanding, although certainly not the fault of the operator. The organisation of them and especially in Ponta Delgada was excellent - the team were extremely helpful and knowledgeable. The weather was disappointing but obviously out of anyone's control. Didn't see any whales which again is out of anyone's control but nonetheless, it was a bit disappointing. The staff in the Sao Miguel hotel were also excellent, especially the ladies on reception. The breakfast food was OK, but the evening food was not so good though, so we ate out most evenings (We weren't all inclusive but did eat in the restaurant one evening, and for the money, 50 euros for both of us, it was quite poor.

Read the operator's response here:

Dear Mark Thanks for your comments and great you saw so many dolphins! One thing about the hotel buffet in our standard 4**** hotel is that we never recommend guests eat there! We give a good restaurant guide and although their bar service is adequate for a snack, the restaurants closeby are excellent. Thanks

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Seeing Blue whales which was breathtaking

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

look at alternatives if you have a lot of trips planned whale watching especially around Easter as there are only limited things to do where we stayed

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

yes

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

The vacation was disappointing due to the weather and many cancelled trips and limited things to do and the trips that did take place did not always live up to expectation with too much emphasis on commercial clients and less bespoke for people who want the true whale and dolphin watching experience as most people who went just did a half day as part of their vacation.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Seeing a blue whale, 2 together

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Not much to do in either location, if that suits you fine Zodiac seats not that comfortable can’t move much

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Could’ve been better if I’d thought it through or someone had explained how boring both locations are. I left early in the end at extra cost Ok if you don’t mind doing nothing much after each whale trip 3 cancelled on Sao Miguel so that was worse. lajes de Pico has 1 restaurant really, other is posh if I’d known before I’d have done 3 days in each Far too long for both locations

Read the operator's response here:

Dear Joel, Great to hear you had such great sightings of Blue whales on Pico Island. Our guests come to the remote islands for nature, wildlife and peace where tourism is quite small scale. Sorry you were bored and questioned the number of days you were on vacation. Having taken this trip on your own, we did tell you when booking about our small group tours on Pico but the dates did not work for you. Most solo travelers prefer being with a group so they can easily socialise and make their own fun. Some of your sea trips were cancelled due to bad weather and I understand you rented a car and did your own tour, however the islands are not full of lively restaurants, bars and clubs with a vibrant social scene, so sorry you were bored. We did give you a guide to Pico with various restaurant options and the guides can recommend their favourites, there are at least 4 restaurants a short distance by foot or taxi from the boat base. I sincerely hope you have some great memories of the nature and the whales, your photo of a Blue Whale tail was Amazing and it is rare to see their tails! We will certainly ensure single travelers are aware that if they don’t travel in a group they need to ensure they have a busy itinerary or be happy to be doing their own thing with company on the activities only and with the support of the guides on the boats and land tours.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Seeing the landscape AND seascape of the Azores, and learning about the history of the islands.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Try to arrange your schedule so that the boat trips alternate with land-based excursions. We ended up having 2 land tours and then 3 boat trips in a row. It wasn’t bad but would have been more enjoyable to alternate them.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

São Miguel (and Ponta Delgada in particular) is heavily dependent on tourism, so yes - we definitely felt that the locals appreciated our presence after a year of little or no business due to Covid. The whale watching companies highlight the scientific research that goes on year-round, and the students and biologists on board take photos and research notes on the whales and dolphins encountered on each trip, so it seems that the tours help with education and conservation efforts.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Very good. The Azores are beautiful islands with an interesting history, excellent food, and very friendly people. We enjoyed our boat trips and saw 3 species of whale/dolphin on each trip. The land tours were fun and allowed us to see the interior of the island.

Read the operator's response here:

Dear Deborah Thanks so much for your excellent review and I am glad your vacation was not disrupted by Covid issues and that you had a wonderful time in the Azores. It is a very special place indeed. I wanted to respond to your comments about the schedule. Usually there is a variation in how the activities are spaced and guests have a choice in that. However, if there is any adverse sea conditions you would have land tours instead of trips to sea. Also as a result of the pandemic and reduced capacity the activity providers have other issues to contend with in terms of minimum numbers on tours and the tour schedules as well as weather disruption. I am so pleased you were able to take all the activities you had booked. Wishing you the very best Amanda

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The trips to sea in order to see the wildlife

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Not to worry about where and how you board the boats - there is space to see once you are out at sea. Make the most of the different boats that go on the trips.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes we felt strongly that this was the case. We also really liked the passion and expertise of the staff who accompanied us on the trips.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

It really lived up to expectation and felt it was well organised as a vacation package.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The " be a marine biologist for a day" trip was amazing, not only did we see whales and dolphins but got to understand a lot more about the research being done and all the conservation and protection measures that are ongoing. Ruis and Flavia, the two biologists we went out with, are lovely people and their commitment and dedication was inspiring and heartwarming. Definitely worth doing this trip first as further trips are much more enjoyable and interesting when armed with the insight gained from the full day trip. Brilliant!!!

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Spread out your tips to sea in order to : allow some recovery time in between. It is very tiring being out on a rib if the sea is at all choppy. and, to give yourselves the best chance of good sightings as if the sea is rough it is much harder to spot anything. Also, as Sao Miguel is such a lovely island, it is worth spending time exploring. As wonderful as the whales and dolphins are we would have missed a lot without the jeep trips we did.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Ultimately, our spending must have helped support the economy and the local people and I fell we trod quite lightly from an environmental perspective. The plane journeys to get there are the worst part of it but how else do you get there?

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Simply wonderful.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The half day whale watching trip out on the small speed boat was very exciting, Horta was our favourite base and Pico and Capelinhos on Faial were fascinating landscapes. And not forgetting the hot springs at Furnas! Most of all we'll remember the enthusiasm and knowledge of our various guides who helped give us more than the usual superficial tourist experience.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

It is well worth booking the 3 half day whale watching trips - it gets addictive! We were lucky and saw whales and dolphins on each trip but its not guaranteed. Personally a whole day would have been too much as we were beginning to feel the cold.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes because local people took us round on the tours and tailor made them to our requests and the changing weather with their knowledge in depth of each island.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Excellent. We would seriously consider returning some day.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

There were so many exciting parts to this trip that it is really hard to just pick one. If I had to, it would be the first day we went to sea, it was on my birthday and we were surrounded by Dolphins. A truly amazing experience.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

The Azores is quite like the UK weather wise so make sure you take clothes for rain and sun.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Everyone we dealt with on this vacation stressed the need for respect and protection of the animals we had come to visit and this was exactly what we wanted to hear. Having worked in conservation for many years the attitude of Responsible Travel towards the animals and the environment was exactly what we have been looking for.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

A fantastic vacation run by people who truly care for the earth and all the creatures that inhabit it. Highly recommended.

Seeing whales and dolphins

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Bring warm clothes for the boat. Although not part of this trip, beware of Azores Airlines. They have been terrible.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Benefited local people, but not really the other two.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Great fun and well organised once I got there, but I missed 2 days due to flight cancellation.

Read the operator's response here:

Dear Carole Thank you so much for positive your review and I am so sorry that you missed the first 2 days of your vacation due to flight disruption by the local airline. However good to know you managed to catch up all your dolphin and whale watching trips so that you did not miss anything. We can of course assist if you want to claim compensation from the airline for the disruption they caused.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The anticipation and then the excitement of actually seeing the sperm and pilot whales that honoured us with their presence!

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Be prepared for the heat and humidity in the Azores (early June). Book a land trip - San Miguel is a beautiful island. Be patient when you go whale and dolphin watching, they aren't waiting to see you but you'll not be disappointed by whatever you see. If you are vegan or vegetarian, you'll have to shop around a bit for suitable restaurants (there's only one actual veggie place - Rotas, which is brilliant but very small, you'd be best booking. Look it up on Happy Cow). This is a wonderful vacation!

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We felt that the operator was completely dedicated to conservation of the whales and dolphins and very respectful of them and their environment. Tourism is an important part of life in the Azores and therefore a vacation there is definitely helping the local economy.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

It was brilliant! Thanks!

Seeing a group of four sperm whales resting together on the surface just in front of the boat.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Try to spend as much time as you can out on the water to maximise your chance of sightings.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We appreciated the way in which the whale watching trips were also being used to record information about the local populations of whales and dolphins.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

It fully lived up to our expectations.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

We were on the cat and a huge gasp went up from everyone on board; a fin whale had swum in front of the boat and opened its mouth out of the water to feed. It was only a split second but that sight is engraved on my memory. My partner didn't see it, he was looking the other way at the time.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Think very carefully about going on the rib. The sea conditions change during the trip; we went out in fairly calm conditions but it got rougher on the way back. People even sitting on the back were complaining but the skipper explained that he had to get us back and he couldn't help the waves. I was wishing I hadn't booked the rib for the following day- but that trip was much calmer, just an exhilarating ride.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We got the impression that tourism is important for the local economy, especially during the land trips to the tea factory etc. The second rib ride ended up being a litter picking exercise; the skipper fished out a rope, plastic crate, and bucket out of the ocean.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

It was fantastic, wish I had booked more land trips. The guides on the boat and mini bus were so knowledgable about everything. Their English was excellent and they answered all our questions. Our hotel was 3 star but we couldn't work out why it wasn't rated 4 star.

Read the operator's response here:

Thanks for your wonderful review. So glad you had such a wonderful vacation. We all gasped here in the office when we read it!! Your very own Blue Planet moment!! Glad the hotel surpassed expectation. Amanda

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Going out to sea in a small RIB to watch the dolphins and the whales.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Ensure a variety of clothing to cope with rapid weather changes.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I think that there was good consideration given to trying to protect the environment and supporting conservation. However, with increased direct flights to the Azores from England, America etc. I worry about the long term consequences for the islands in the future and how they will cope wth the increased number of tourists

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

An excellent vacation with very knowledgeable marine biologists on board the boats.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Achieving a long awaited goal of going to The Azores

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Be responsible! The tourist industry is relatively new and growing fast. They are already having to cope with litter etc from careless tourists. They are very proud of their paradise

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes - local people work in the tourist industry. The environmental impact is growing as tourism does. This summer flights from New York will increase from 1 a week to 5. Some support of conservation - we had marine biologist with us when whale watching so there was an educational element. However the boats could be a bit invasive and will only grow in number as tourism increases.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

We had a fabulous time. The Azores completely lived up and exceeded my expectations. Delightful, kind people, a beautiful and safe environment. Great food and wine. I'm so glad I went this year. I worry that it will become spoilt as so many other places have. Fingers crossed that it doesn't

The Rib boat trip and seeing the Finn whales. Greatly missed out by one day on seeing blue, humpback and whales which would have made it an extra special experience. But they are out there if you’re lucky.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Maybe try and have a day between boat trips if you have time to maybe increase chances of seeing more diversity

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. All trips and staff were very respectful of the wildlife and also making recommendations of how we can all help to protect wildlife and the environment We scooped several items from the ocean on our trips.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Very enjoyable. Friendly island with sufficient variety of restaurants and things to do

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

whale watching!

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Frustrating how good everyone's English was - no chance to practice Portuguese...

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

A little squeamish about the whale-watching, to be honest - there are a lot of boats following around not that many whales, and the noise of the motors can't be good for them. we did see a couple of other tour operators also not sticking to the rules re: keeping distance from the animals.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Read the operator's response here:

The boat company we use does follow the guidelines which restrict numbers of boats around the whales and the required distance to be kept from the whales. However when other operators do not, it can indeed create disturbances for these creatures. We ask all our guests to report any boats which are not following the regulations - we do the reporting ourselves if our staff witness the guidelines being breached. Any time this is done with a strong personal testimony and photos it goes a long way to ensuring the culprits receive a fine which is an effective deterrent. Operators can also have their licence revoked if they persistently ignore good practice.

This was a fantastic vacation. All the staff, guides and marine biologists were brilliant. I did wonder if our 6 year old would be a bit too young but she really enjoyed it and can't wait to go back to school to tell everyone about all the different types of dolphins we saw. The land tour of the island was also well worth doing: swimming in natural thermal water, having a traditional lunch, visiting a tea plantation, drinking natural spring water straight from the ground, and plenty of beautiful scenery.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The whale and dolphin trips. The operator and their local agent were great: friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. The best experience was the Zodiac boat, when we got up close and personal with a huge pod of common dolphins (including some new-borns) and with three fin whales, who stayed with us for ages, plus flying fish and Cory's shearwaters. We also saw sperm and humpback whales, common dolphins and some Risso's dolphins from the catamaran.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Take a jeep tour of the island. It's good fun.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Several times seeing Blue Whales starting their deep dive with flukes in the air. We saw Blue whales, Sperm whales, Fin whales galore and a solitary Humpback whale which also did a "flukes in the air" dive. We heard on the long towed hydrophone the "song" (actually clicking) of the 20 strong Sperm whale pod socialising while escorted by bottle-nose dolphins. We frequently saw common dolphins and one spectacular display of striped dolphins playing alongside while the boat was traveling at speed. One loggerhead turtle was seen and Cory Shearwaters frequently gave impressive flying displays around the boat.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Be sure of your ability not to be sea-sick. Take appropriate medication if in any doubt. The motion of the catamaran on which you will spend about seven hours a day can be fairly uneven although completely safe. Take warm clothing, waterproofs, good head covering that will stay on in a stiff wind and, perversely, high factor sun block. Even on showery days the Ultra Violet index was 8 (on a scale up to 10). Expect to cover your face in sun block then put on a sensible head covering and a "buff" which is a thing you can buy locally and leaves one looking like an old fashioned bank robber wearing a mask. You may scoff at others looking like this on the first day but you won't by the second day. Follow the example of the crew. Cover up or burn at sea off the Azores in May.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

All staff were local (the resident cetologist was American by birth but a local by virtue of very long residence). Strict adherence to the code of conduct governing responsible whale watching was evident at all times.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Outstanding. Our expectations were far exceeded. All arrangements from the airport on arrival back to the airport for departure were faultless. The resident cetologist and Jairo (the captain) could not have been pleasanter and more helpful. The accommodation in the Hotel Do Canal was first class and their breakfasts were memorable and welcome before a full day at sea. The two group meals included were excellent examples of local cuisine.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Beautiful island with ideal temperatures for walking, hiking and surfing. May rain a bit but usually short lasting. Food is very affordable and prices are considerably lower than in the United Kingdom. Whale spotting is good and it is best to select a small operator who is likely to do that bit extra for you.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Best to book your own travel, accommodation and activities. Hiring a car is easy and a good way to see the island. Choose your whale watching operator carefully as big operators are less personal.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Benefits to the local people can be maximised if you book the vacation directly. If the locals get more from tourism, they can afford to reduce the volume of visitors which in turn would benefit the environment. Travel undoubtedly has a negative impact on the environment but one hopes that a right balance is struck between conserving nature and improving local conditions.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

I loved everything about my vacation to the Azores but the whale watching is why I wanted to go there, it did not disappoint. I saw a humpback whale, two sperm whales of which one showed the tail when it dived under the water and three fin whales. The dolphins gave a show and were very entertaining to watch. The island of Sao Miguel is stunning, very green and beautiful. Ideal for walking and swimming in the hot springs.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

I think the end of May/ beginning of June is the best time to see the whales. The weather was excellent and it is not too busy on the island.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

It definitely benefitted the local people, I stayed in a lovely hostel/ lodge, shopped and ate in local shops and restaurants. The tours were all run by a local company, who was able to show me the beauty of the island and the ocean.

Disappointed not to see many whales in 4 trips out to sea.

Dear Maureen, Thanks so much for your review. We shall certainly give your feedback to the hotel re offering more options for vegetarians. As our vacations are not full board, we suggest guests try out local excellent restaurants. The restaurant guide we gave you had details of an excellent vegetarian restaurant 5 mins walk form the hotel, loved by our other guests, so hope you got to go there. Sorry you had bad weather, it is challenging, but glad you enjoyed the island which offers so many great alternative activities. Kind regards, Amanda

It was fantastic!! I would love to go again and would highly recommend it.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The whole trip was an adventure. The boat trips were amazing. We were lucky enough to see 3 different types of dolphin on each trip and a manta ray on one of the trips.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Take sea sickness tablets. I did just as a precaution and therefore could enjoy each trip without sickness.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

It definitely supported environmental impacts and supported conservation. The animals welfare was always taken into account on our approach. The guides were very knowledgeable and answered any questions we had.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Swimming with the Dolphin's was excellent and so exciting, would, do it again in a flash, only wished I had booked for 5 swims.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

If swimming with Dolphin's I would recommend getting your own mask and snorkel, only to ensure a good fit and some sort of water shoe or diving boot. Don't bother about taking waterproof jacket on the trips as one is provided.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Local people benefited by being employed and the Dolphin's welfare was the utmost importance at all times.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

It was great just wished I had booked more trips to go on

Read the operator's response here:

Dear Jacque Thank you so much for your wonderful review below, so glad you had such an amazing experience with the dolphins in the Azores. Many of our guests are fine with the mask and snorkel that are supplied and often try on a few different ones to get the best fit which is important ( nothing worse than dolphins beneath you and a mask full of water obscuring your vision!). Some people do bring their own gear and snorkeling fins can be taken if you are confident with them , although often not needed. Waterproof jackets are handy on the whale watching boats or on land tours but yes are supplied on the swim boats. Hope to see you again either in the Azores or our program in Egypt, you are most welcome!! May the memories stay strong! Amanda

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Seeing wildlife in its own environment but in a non intrusive manner

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Book excursions beforehand. Use suncrean even on cloudy/foggy days!

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The main reason we booked through you was because I wanted to see Dolphins and whales as they should be seen in the wild and not a swimming pool doing tricks. And boy did you guys deliver. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to family and friends.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Heart stopping, invigorating, active, peaceful and some times restful.

Being in the company of a wonderful people and getting to see some amazing wildlife.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Be aware that this is weather (wind and rain) dependant so if its not good, then you may not go out.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Absolutely - this encompasses what sustainable use of natural resources is all about - nature conservation as well as providing a livelihood and benefit to local people

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Would we go again - yes we would

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

We have been to the Azores before, so for us it wasn't an instant "Wow". We were fortunate that we saw Finn and Hump Back Whales.....very exciting! Nature certainly thrills! The scenery was stunning and impressive

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Be prepared for the weather! Out there they say you can get three seasons in one day. It was great having whale trips pre booked for you so you were ahead of the crowds but be prepared to re-arrange due to the weather. The boat crew staff were very happy to offer alternatives if required.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Definitely. The local company were excellent. Nothing was too much trouble. Great knowledge of the countryside and of the whales. Very conscious of safety and not getting to close to the whales.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Very Good. Very clean everywhere. People very friendly and helpful Good food. What more could you want.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Whale watching-it was amazing to see animals in their natural environment. We saw three of the largest creatures in the world.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

The Azores is NOT a conventional destination so not for those seeking a guaranteed sun vacation. The best time for whale watching is probably early May but be prepared to be flexible with the arrangements as whale watching is very weather dependant.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Certainly tourism supports the local economy but at present this is nicely balanced with preserving the environment. Whale watching is undertaken on a very careful basis

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

4 star as per definitions below

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Getting back home safely! No, just kidding. Being underwater with the dolphins (of course!) We got on really well with the Azorians who seem happy to have us there and share their land. The food was tremendous if you knew where to look. Would love to explore again and more of the islands.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Find the free botanical garden in Ponta Delgarda. Utterly fabulous. If the sea is still cold, consider bringing your own good wetsuit or ways to keep warm when out of the water on the swimming trip. Book plenty of trips in case the weather is changeable Find out where the locals and guides eat.... we did and it was fabulous!

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Certainly supported local people and conservation through the companies - or at least I hope they do!! I guess our very presence is an impact on the environment, but it seemed everyone was concerned with minimising it and maximising benefts where possible. I wanted more optional talks from the biologists about the sea and land life there - had to keep pestering people who were at work!

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

I was really taken by the Azores, the people and the wild-life. I would happily come again and explore more. I was also impressed with how smoothly the trip was organised and helpful the operators were.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The last boat trip on the zodiac - seeing sperm whales.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Be patient and flexible. Patient because whales come and go and one can never be sure to see one. Flexible because the weather is changing, the sea makes it sometimes just impossible to have a boat trip. The vacation provider however has been totally customer-friendly and has always proposed alternatives - be it other boat trip or land trips.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. The environmental commitmemt of the vacation provider - and in particular the sensible way of whale and dolphin watching - must be stressed. Our vacations is a support on a small scale but every little helps.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Excellent-

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Being on a superfast Zodiac RIB trying to keep up with hundreds of synchronised leaping Atlantic Striped Dolphins.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Grippy shoes right but no need for wet weather gear for the boats as this is provided. We took two fleeces and two Berghauses to the Azores and back without wearing them. To be sure of seeing whales book May, June, July or August. We were there in September!

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

All of above and we were particularly impressed that the local people seemed very environmentally aware, for example restoring native vegetation, developing renewable energy, energy efficiency recycling etc.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

One of our best (and in our 60s we have been on some!)

Read the operator's response here:

Dear Ian, So pleased you had such an amazing vacation. The sightings vary from month to month and there are "best times" to visit such as late April, May and June for the Blue whales and Fin whales. However all thru the season you have a good chance to see sperm whales as they are resident and there are a lot of surprise encounters in the Azores of various species!! Also it is good to have warm clothing at any time as weather can be changeable, but glad you enjoyed marvellous weather in late September! May you have many more memorable vacations like this and thanks for taking the time to send in this review!

Seeing sperm whale and rissos dolphin and loggerhead turtle

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

with internal flights, make sure the flight is actually going at the time stated on the itiniary with the flight company before going to the airport. ours was changed and we weren't notified. (SATA said they had told the company we booked them with, but they did not transfer the information onto us)We therefore waisted time at the airport waiting for the next flight

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes on all counts

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Very enjoyable, will definitely go back

Thank you so much for your wonderful review and so glad you had such an excellent time. I am so sorry you had delays with your flights and I hope you have been able to bring that up with the flight agency you booked through. I am glad we were able to re arrange your transfer to fit with new timings and ensure you were met at the airport. However , as guests book flights themselves, communication from the airline should go direct to the guest at all times or via a flight agent. We are not informed of these changes. Kind regards and I hope you can visit the Azores again some time. Amanda

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The most memorable part of the vacation was, without a doubt, seeing the dolphins and whales in their natural environment. The dolphins swam right under and past the boat, also leading it at times! Swimming with the dolphins was also thrilling! They really are such amazing creatures! We saw 3 types of dolphins - bottle nose, common and Atlantic spotted, and a fin whale. Also the land tours to the volcanic crater lakes, hot springs and botanical gardens were great too!

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

When you swim with the dolphins you go out on the smaller boats, only take the bare minimum of what you need, in a waterproof bag. The floor of the boat gets wet and that is where the bags are kept. Practice with a snorkel before hand, in the ocean it's not always as easy as when you may have previously used one. Put on LOTS of sun cream!! We had 3 trips to swim with the dolphins and I think this is a must. Although we saw dolphins on every trip, I did not always see them when I was in the water. The more times you go, the more confident you feel in the water and the greater your chances of swimming with them.Definitely book any land tours you want to do before you get there, we didn't, and although we did manage to get on some, they were very busy and we had to reshuffle some of our swim and whale watching days to make it work.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I felt the company who ran the swims, whale watching and land tours were extremely well organised and experienced. The way we looked for the dolphins and whales was very sensitively done, there was no chasing or harassing the animals - it was completely on the animals terms at all times and carried out with respect. I was very impressed. Also the staff were all very knowledgable and able to answer all questions, as well as provide very interesting info throughout the trips, they were great!

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

This was a fab vacation and experience. To experience these animals in their natural environment was just amazing. We also saw flying fish, turtles, 3 types of dolphins and a fin whale - wow!!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The best parts were the 3 whale-watching trips where we saw many sperm whales and several different types of dolphin, and also a trip to Furnas where we spent an hour or so in the hot pool there. Worth a visit, and the gardens are lovely.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Take advantage of the trips on offer, to see as much of the island as you can as the scenery is spectacular. The local travel guides are very knowledgable and provide a lot of background information on the island

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The whale-watching trips were careful not to get too close to the whales or disrupt their activities. I am sure the local economy is benefitting from the tourist trade and helping local people and employment.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Very memorable trip, all the locals we met were extremely nice and helpful and we were very lucky with our whale and dolphin sightings.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Seeing Sperm Whales in the Atlantic Ocean

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Make sure you do take a water-proof bag to protect your camera/phone etc when on the open rib boats. A plastic carrier is probably not sufficient

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

All services employed local people. The Azores seemed generally environmentally sensitive.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

A good vacation that delivered most of the time.

Whales, whales and more whales!

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

It is not as warm as we expectged, in May - so take warm gear, especially for out on the boats

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, definitely supported the whales, giving lots of information, but not sure about the trip to Furnas - the food was disgusting. Same tour but a sandwich lunch would have been much better.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Fabulous. The tour operators were awesome.

review 20 Apr 2015

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Seeing three Fin Whales. The group included an adolescent who, being curious, came quite close to the boat followed by the adults; we got a great view. We also saw Hump Back Whale and both Common and Bottle Nosed Dolphins. The knowledgable Marine Biologists on the boat added to the overall experience. I cannot recommend the team highly enough, they showed great respect for the animals whilst providing a brilliant Whale and Dolphin watching experience.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Make sure you bring waterproofs and a towel as the weather in the Azores is very changeable and you are likely to get wet. Equally bring a hat and sun screen as you will get burnt when the sun is out. Don't confine yourself to just one trip, there is something different every day and the animals are sometimes hard to find. Do make time to see the interior of the Island. There are a number of dormant volcanoes that have rainwater lakes that are quite beautiful. If you are not hiring a car you can book trips with this company locally; we did this and again found the guides hugely knowledgable about the geological formations of the island, flora and fauna as well as the cultural make up of the Azores.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The whale watching company were very keen to give information about the very negative aspects of keeping whales and dolphins in captivity ,also the environmental impact of human waste, for example plastic, on marine life. San Miguel has many fine, locally owned and run restaurants that provide excellent Azorian and Portuguese food and, fortunately, there are hardly any chain shops so most tourism does genuinely seem to benefit the local population. Our hotel was very "corporate" and, once inside, you could be any where in the world. I do not know if it is locally owned but it did feel like a chain. That said we were not in it much and both the room and service were very good.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip; the people, animals and islands were a joy. The travel company were highly efficient and our itinerary was delivered faultlessly.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Seeing Bottlenose Dolphins up close

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Take plenty of wet weather gear! We would also recommend hiring a car to explore the island and give you a bit more freedom. Car hire, if booked through the hotel, is very reasonable.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I would like to think so

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

It was a relaxing vacation and once we got there it was cheap to eat out and visit sites. We were disappointed that the hotel was advertised as 'every room has a balcony with sea views' whereas in fact only half do and we had the embarrassment of having to ask to be moved as the room we were given was tiny with no balcony and a view over the car park. The hotel staff were helpful, but it was awkward nonetheless and meant repacking our cases so they could move them for us once another room became available. We suggest that this is changed in the brochure as it gives a false impression. Poor weather all week meant that one of our whale watching trips was cancelled, but that's just the luck of the draw.

Read the operator's response here:

Dear Barbara I am glad you enjoyed your vacation and really sorry you were not given the room we had confirmed for you which was reserved with hotel. This is a very unusual situation and in all other cases our guests are given the room that is described on their voucher and confirmed with the reservations department. We have addressed this matter with the hotel and will ensure it does NOT occur again for future guests, so thank you for informing us. Also if you had contacted us, we would have taken care of asking the reception to change your room on arrival which is part of our customer care and may have spared you some inconvenience and been less awkward. Sadly, we were not aware of the problem until you wrote this email, so we were not able to respond and help. Thanks again for letting us know and we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience kind regards

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Remember the Azores is in the Atlantic not the med'. No beaches , no 24/7 drinking / music, perfect for nature lovers. The weather is very changable. Pack a waterproof fleece & warm layers. I wore my wellies ( beginning of June ) most days.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The whales of course! But every trip on the boat was exciting, you just never knew what you were going to see each day. The memories I have from this trip will stay with me forever. And I have to say that the people I met on the vacation also made it for me.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Be prepared for a long journey to get to the Azores but once you get there it is worth it. I went with the hope of seeing maybe one or two whales but what I saw each day surpassed that expectation. Be prepared for any weather, it can be grey and cloudy in the morning and glorious sunshine in the afternoon. Most importantly - sun protection. When out on the boats you forget how strong the sun can be with the excitement of seeing those marvellous creatures. And, if you suffer from sea sickness a port & brandy should sort you out.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The crews of the boats were local and all the staff at the hotel. We were very aware that everyone around us were very proud of their local environment and looked after it. We were made aware that for every person taken on the trips a donation was being made to plant trees on the mainland of Portugal to replace forests which were lost during forest fires. We were given informative talks in the evenings which made us more aware of our surrounding environment, no matter where we were in the world. To even plant those seeds in our heads will help in some way.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Simply the best! The accommodation was simple but all that was needed. Everyone else on the group all had the same goal - to see whales and we certainly did. I had a fantastic time and have to admit to having a lump in my throat when I saw my first Blue Whale. It is something I will never forget and sometimes have a smile on my face when I think of the time I got to spend sitting out in the ocean in the presence of those amazing animals. If I was asked would I do it again - YES! In a heartbeat. I know that if I did I would have a different experience but that is what it is all about. It is the feeling you get when you see whales and dolphins. Loved it!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The 5 boat trips - each in different conditions with different dolphin/whale sightings.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Fins NOT necessary and Flotation vests not used and not recommended if decent swimmer. You are in the water for a few minutes at a time and do not need the flotation vests to prevent fatigue. The fins cause too much splashing and frighten off the dolphins.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Accommodation spotless and well located. The team are friendly, kind and approachable as well as very knowledgeable. Overall - very good.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

If possible I would suggest to book the swimming with dolphin option, cause you will have the option also to go whale and dolphins watching.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The organization provides a low environmental impact whale watching vacation. They also assure to plant trees in Portugal in exchange of cruise.
