We were able to book a dinner with a local family in Dubrovnik where we spent the evening eating and sharing fellowship. We loved eating truffles on the Istrian Peninsula. We also loved the freedom our rental car gave us to explore outside of the busy city centers.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Try to go in the off or shoulder season. Croatia is definitely suffering from over tourism in certain areas. If you can’t travel during the shoulder season, seek out lesser known towns and islands.3. I feel like Responsible Travel does the best job they can of partnering with locals to provide a meaningful experience. Providing a guide of additional local experiences (shopping, restaurants, excursions) would be a great addition.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Talk to the local people... they will help you and make very useful suggestions. We hired a car, it was very straight forward to have it delivered to hotel and then dropped off in Dubrovnik. Don’t waste much time in Dubrovnik. Ridiculously/unnecessarily expensive. (£28.00 to walk the walls- takes no more than 1.5 hrs). & Hotel Prijecko not 4 star: Very cramped room, not a queen & very old TV technology, that didn’t work, & they couldn’t fix Hotel Degenija fabulous. Hotel Mediteran, good but to far out of Zadar (>45 mins walk to old town and buses didn’t go often.) Local restaurants very poor. Go at this time of year- few people apart from Dubrovnik.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
The lovely and friendly hotel in Plitvice right in the countryside and very close to the Park (Etno Garden), the peace in the wonderful Maskovica Han heritage hotel, the morning markets, the kindness of people, tiny Omis in a grand natural setting, clear sea waters, great food! Andy was very helpful in preparing the trip.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
If I did it again I would spend 2 days in Zagreb because of the many museums and churches and for a chance of taking a guided visit. Guides in Croatia seem very well informed and passionate about their country. Church and museum opening times are very limited so it is hard to visit them, check out the market (morning only) and visit and enjoy the city all in one day. Also 2 days instead of one in Hvar for time to visit the villages and have a dip in the sea. Overall, I would say less moving around, 3 nights in several places instead of 2 and avoid one-nighters as there is always more to see and do than meets the eye. Going to Mljet for one night all the way from Hvar meant a lot of traveling with very little time on the island and not as much time in Ston as we would have liked. Bring water shoes as there are urchins and razor sharp-rocks, and decent length skirts and shorts, tops with short sleeves to visit churches (applies to men too). Learning a few words of the language gets you big smiles from many people.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Benefited local people: Family-owned hotels, eating in small restaurants, buying food from local markets and stalls along the highway (traveling on the smaller roads rather than the toll highways allows for this and for seeing villages and how people live, very rewarding). Visiting family-owned businesses such as Stella Croatia. No positive environmental impact apart from paying entry fees for national parks. Croatia parks are totally overrun by tourists even in September. Croatians are doing a great job of reducing impact under this pressure (boardwalks etc)4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Yes in that it added to the economy in our spending, environmentally we tried to avoid overusing or hotel products as we had our own. However, there is still a lot of plastic use.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

The most memorable parts of the trip were the visits to Plitvice lakes and Krka national park, both parks were very scenic but busy. Zadar by contrast was quiet and not totally touristy yet!2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
The hotel Slavija in Split is inside the pedestrian zone and tucked away so was a bit difficult to find. The pick up from this hotel was also complicated by this with the taxi waiting in the parking for us and not being picked up from the hotel reception as stated.3. The vacation benefited local people by employment and probably conservation in paying entry fees to the national parks, but I can't say we reduced any environmental impacts4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

The road trip was booked in very good sections. We luckily took some travel pillows as some hotels only give one for each guest. If you want tea/coffee in your room take a travel kettle as only one of our six hotels offered this facility. Food is excellent but did not find any curry houses !3. Plitvice was pretty cool. Zagreb was a pleasant surprise, as was Zadar. The staff at the hotels in Zadar, Hvar, and Plitvice deserve a call out for their help, friendliness and service. The hotel and restaurant in Mali Stone was the only part of the vacation that we would not give 5 stars.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Dubrovnik was super crowded. I would recommend staying in the same area where we stayed, and going into town early in the morning to do the hot walk around the walls and explore, then you can go back to the hotel neighborhood in the afternoon and spend some time at the beach, either going into dinner in the old town or just staying and eating near the hotel. Also, if you get into town early, it might be worth it to take the car up to the top of the cable care area, as the line was quite long and the ride wasn't that spectacular.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
I think staying in the smaller hotels supported their businesses, but I'm beginning to feel that travel in general does nothing to reduce environmental impact. I guess I'll have to decide how to handle that guilt! I was impressed with how well Croatia managed their national parks but I was shocked by the number of people visiting on tour busses.4. Although we traveled in the latter half of May, which I reckoned would be a bit off-season, there were sizable crowds in popular venues. Patronizing hotels, restaurants, and doing some very small-scale buying doubtless brought a bit of money into local economies.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
The vacation was terrific. The only disappointment was Split because of the hordes of fellow travelers there and the commercialization of Diocletian's Palace. Everything else was first-rate. There were many highlights so it's hard to choose just 1. The amphitheatre in Pula was amazing, as was Dubrovnik as a whole and all of the towns, small and large with their narrow streets, beautiful churches, squares and other old buildings were an absolute delight. Great food, good wine, lovely people, and easy to find your way around. What's not to like?2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Go with a tour specialist who knows the hotels and routes well. The tour operator were perfect in their choice of hotels and locations and the pace of the tour was perfect. Maybe don't spend more than a couple of nights in any 1 place unless you want to do watersports, day cruises etc. There's so much to see and do but the main sights of each of the towns are easily doable in a day so moving on from place to place is good and the road links are easy. One of our party took a really good maps app on his phone that really helped in finding parking and the fine directions to each hotel. Also, unless you want to go further afield whilst in the Dubrovnik area, give the car back to the rental company as early as possible and take the bus. Traffic and parking are horrendous and expensive and the local bus services are fully geared to moving people in and out efficiently and cheaply.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
We ate in local restaurants, drank local beers and wines and used local services everywhere, tipping where appropriate, so hopefully that will have done some good. We did wonder how the thousands of people descending on some of these places via cruise liners without spending much whilst there was of benefit to the local communities.4. Receive better assistance from the agent regarding many aspects of the plans. Ascertain that the rental car is an automatic. This was not the case for us, despite it being expected. To avoid July/August travel in view of high temperatures and crowds. Choose an alternate destination to Mila Ston. There must be more attractive and friendly locations in that area.3. Thank you for your comments, we are really pleased you enjoyed the Cetina Valley, it is stunning. The hire car we included in our initial quote and on all documents was a group A vehicle; an automatic car was never requested nor stated on any voucher, itinerary or invoice. As automatic cars are a minority option we always request customers request one at the earliest stage and warn that availability is limited and cost is slightly higher compared to the same sized manual transmission car. Unfortunately, the peak season crowds and heat are unavoidable for some parts of any country in Europe in July/August, in fact this is why we have so many more customers on this type of vacation in May, June & September. Mali Ston is one of the less crowded locations near Dubrovnik and is a great base for visiting the area (Peljesac Peninsula, southern Bosnia & Herzegovina, Korcula and Mljet islands), it is also a pretty location in its own right with its old castle walls and oyster farms.

Gavin, I am a little surprised to read this review, posted in mid August when you travelled back in mid May. We answered your correspondence at the time and provided detailed information about both the damage and our attempts to replace the vehicle. Here is the important section of the email I sent you back in May...
My colleagues at Amathus Travel have informed me that the car was new, just 83 kms on the "clock"; this means the tyres were new and in good condition. Unless there was a manufacturing defect it is difficult to explain the incident in any terms other than pure bad luck, something dangerous on the surface of the road which doesn't reflect on your driving but also cannot be blamed upon the condition of the car. I need to ask you if you have any photos or other information about the car prior to the blow out because part of the handover procedure is for you, together with the car hire representative, to examine the car and agree its condition. If there was anything you were unhappy about at this stage you were quite within your rights to request an alternative.
I understand that Last Minute made a number of attempts to exchange the vehicle for you along the way as they have offices in many places along your route. You replied on one occasion that you would let them know a convenient time and place but that, at the moment, "everything was fine". I am, of course, really sorry if the attitude of the car hire agent in Dubrovnik came over as aggressive, this is not at all representative of the feedback we receive about Last Minute's staff (and of their customer service in general). However, he did inform you specifically what the damage was and that it would be charged to your card so they are certain you were aware of both the reason and the approximate amount.
I am reluctant to use this phrase but my hands are tied somewhat in this case because I am told the car was almost brand new, multiple attempts were made to exchange the vehicle, you were informed that the cost would be due and for what. However, as I mentioned right at the outset, if you have photos or an independent assessment which throws new light on this I will support you.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
The most memorable part of our vacation was the time spent at Plitvice. We arrived in torrential rain at c9.00 am, but had come prepared with our ponchos ! The plus side was there were no queues for parking or tickets. By mid morning the weather had cleared and the sun was out. This area has to be unique in the world, with all the walk ways running along the numerous waterfalls and water flowing underneath your feet. We used Route C starting at Entrance 1, which we recommend as you walk up hill which gives you the best view of the waterfalls ahead of you. The boat trip across the lake and use of the "landtrain" from the top lake back to Entrance 1 was straight forward with no long delays. This place is a must visit on a trip through Croatia.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
The roads are excellent quality, and we avoided toll roads and used the coast roads as much as possible with light traffic and wonderful views across to the islands.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
It seems that tourism is the major employer especially in coastal areas, so this has to benefit the local population. We paid numerous fees to enter the parks/museums/city walls etc , which were set at fair levels and so one hopes these go to support on going conservation.4. Difficult to make a choice because the coastline is beautiful and the towns are very interesting but the Plitvice Lakes have the edge and were very memorable even in the rain! Croatia is very dependent on tourism so yes our vacation certainly benefited local people who are employed in the hotels, restaurants etc. The vacation didn't reduce environmental impacts because it was a fly / drive vacation but we did leave the car and walk where we could. We also used buses, passenger ferries where possible so helping the local economy. It supported conservation in that the revenue from tourism does help Croatia to put more money into conserving its natural wonders.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Excellent. A beautiful country to visit and its people are very helpful and friendly. The hotels chosen for us were all of a good standard and everything went very smoothly. Plitvice National Park and walking the walls of Dubrovnik both stand out as super experiences. Both needed early starts but so worth it to get ahead of the crowds and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Art Hotel Kalelarga was by far and away the best hotel and the best breakfast, exceptional on all counts. We were also given a fabulous rental car, a Mercedes A class sport with integral sat nav which was a bonus.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Some of the directions were very misleading and I would like to suggest clearer instructions. For Zadar if you put either of your suggested parking areas into a sat nav you ended up in the wrong place. Parking in Zadar is very difficult and strictly enforced. We saw two cars being removed in the short time we were there. Instructions should be as follows: Park as near to the pedestrian bridge as you possibly can, pay for one hours parking in the machine, coins only so come prepared. Go through the gate immediately opposite the bridge and head for the top left hand corner of the square. Turn right and after 30 metres you will see Gourmet Kalelarga on your left, a cake and coffee shop. The entrance to the hotel is at the back of this shop. The lovely reception staff then came with us back to the car to collect bags, we gave her the keys and she paid the two days parking ticket with an attendant which was about 130 kn and put the ticket on our car. We just paid her the money. It would be impossible to put that much into a meter. Again parking in Trogir is difficult. Park as near to the right hand side of the arched pedestrian bridge. Take your ticket with you to the hotel which is 5 mins walk away. When you leave the hotel gives you a ticket to get out the car park if you pay them the month, 70kn per night. So parking in general is difficult and expensive in Croatia and maybe it would be better to consider doing the islands as foot passengers. We rarely strayed from the port in Hvar or Korcula. Do not send anyone else to Hotel Marko Polo, it is not great, big rooms but dark and badly need updating but the worst is breakfast with instant coffee and squash out a machine passing for fruit juice! The Bosnian restaurant with the unlikely name of Taj Mahal next door to Hotel Lero in Dubrovnik deserves a special mention, happiest staff we met all two weeks and Bosnian food was a revelation.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
It's hard to answer this question. I think the money spent visiting Plitvice national park and also Krka must benefit the environment as it pays for the upkeep and conservation of these beautiful places. However the whole island really runs on tourism and driving around, taking lots of ferries may not be the greenest. Most of the population seem to work somewhere in tourism so it must benefit the economy.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
We had a really excellent vacation and even when things were not quite as good as we would have liked we could always make the best of things. It had the right mix of rest and relaxation and activity, and we were very fortunate to have good weather, only really raining when we were traveling between places. We would thoroughly recommend Croatia as a destination, but be prepared for it to be busy and not cheap. An important note regarding Zadar - whilst the Art Hotel Kalelarga is a fabulous accommodation we don't usually recommend it for those on a self-drive vacation due to its location in the middle of the old city. On this occasion the instructions for parking came directly from the hotel and not from our usual maps and parking instructions. Parking in some locations in high season is limited but the majority of the hotels we recommend have their own or good value arrangements with a secure local car park. This is one reason that island hopping vacations (without the car) are more popular in the peak period.

We stayed in 6 cities and travelled through 4 former Yugoslav states. Our favourite city was Split. It is the ideal spot to do island hopping. The most fascinating city was Sarajevo. We were not expecting such a diversity of cultures living side by side.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Do visit Montenegro - but don't make it a day trip - stay one or two nights to fully explore Kotor and Budva. We visited via a day trip from Dubrovnik. We were warned that the border crossings would take a long time. From Dubrovnik, make sure you depart at 7am. Even with an early departure, expect a one hour wait at the "exit" border on the Croatia side and the "entry" border into Montenegro (make sure you have the "green card" insurance papers for your rental car.) Our return from Montenegro to Dubrovnik was punishing. The wait at the border was in excess of three hours.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Of course tourism does have a positive impact on the local economy - restaurants, bars and landmark attractions are kept busy. Reducing environmental impact? I'm not sure I understand the question. Arrange your destinations to allow ample time at each stop, allow 2 nights so that a full day is available for exploration. Must visits are the National parks, Trogir and Dubrovnik, but the last will be very busy with tourists now that cruise liners arrive daily in the spring and summer months. Also take time to go up country into the hills away from the crowds. Driving is relatively easy but watch for poorly marked pedestrian crossings and mad scooter riders in built up areas. Take plenty of the local currency as euros are not popular and credit cards are welcome in limited places. Discuss the itinerary you plan with RT they are extremely helpful and knowledgeable.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Croatian economy relies heavily on tourism; as a result the environment does take a bit of a battering; the locals are keen to identify the importance of conservation but struggle with the amount of tourists visiting their country. The Plitvice lakes and Dubrovnik were both very busy with other tourists. At Plitvice we queued for a long time for tickets to get in so get there early and to avoid queuing on each of the walkways to get through (and the electric boats) - take to the trails around the lakes they offer wonderful views. Dubrovnik suffers with the influx of cruise ships and is very crowded, many of the locals are complaining and there may be restrictions in the future reducing the number of cruise ships arriving at the same time. We did not walk the walls as there were too many people and we felt the charge to access (150 Kuna each - about £20) was far too high. We stuck to exploring the back streets which are very pretty with lots of little shops and restaurants which seem to charge less than those on the main drag.3. We appreciate that you stayed in a mix of larger hotels and local hotels (the larger ones were primarily your choices but even these offer a good environmental ethos). However, the small hotels on the itinerary are locally owned and offer a lot to the local economy (i.e. not just local suppliers and staff but profits are spent in the local economy, too). We note that you stayed in Trebinje, a small town in Bosnia which has ONLY local businesses and has attracted part-funded EU development projects in small-scale local agriculture such as honey production (available in the main street market) - this town, so near Dubrovnik, is a great example of somewhere that can benefit massively from individual rather than mass-tourism visits. It is important to note that visitors to Montenegro on this kind of fly-drive would visited at least two, possibly three national parks which have excellent environmental support and green tourism credentials (Durmitor, Biogradsko, Skadarsko Jezero).
We take your point regarding the Adriatic coast and , as a whole, we don't promote the coastal resorts very much and prefer to recommend Kotor town and its small hotels; unfortunately, as seen across much of the Mediterranean in August and early September the main coast roads running through these type of resorts can be busy. The additional problem is that returning to Croatia you are crossing the EU's external border and this can be held up in peak times. We are pleased to read that you noted the roads and places of scenic beauty inland were relatively quiet, even for peak season.
In addition to our planning and guidance for reservations and routes it is, of course, important for visitors to seek out and research how their visit can best benefit the local economy once they are there; such as using local guides, considering public transport occasionally, buying local products, eating in smaller restaurants and offering donations to historic and cultural sites even when there is no compulsory charge, and so on.

Try to use the No. 25 from Plitvice (Korenica) to Karlobag nice drive and specatular as you come over the last mountain and see the sea.3. Excellent. The travel arrangements worked like clockwork. The hotel Korsal was especially comfortable.The 'park view' apartment allocated to us at the apart hotel Pharia was horrible . There were no trees ,grass or flowers in view. Instead,it was on the ground floor and the bedroom looked out onto the steps down from the road and our living are and balcony looked onto a flagged area outside reception. Your customers ought to know that in this context 'park' has a different meaning from what we would expect in England. We contacted the local agents to tell them and they negociated for us to have two free breakfasts but since we wanted to self cater this was not terribly useful. Of all the cities in Croatia that we visited (we did not go to Zagreb), Old Town Zadar had the best mix of atmosphere, culture and cuisine. Take Croatian Kunas, not Euros. Some hotels will accept Euros, but shops, restaurants and tourist attractions are prohibited by law from accepting Euros. Istra, and the north of Croatia, is less busy and significantly less expensive that Dubrovnik. Plitvice is not suitable for wheelchair users or people with reduced mobility.3. Not particularly, other than the income from tourism is helping Croatia recover from the Balkans conflict. The popularity of Dubrovnik has priced locals out of living in the Old Town, and the proliferation of pavement restaurants hampers day-to-day life.4. There were numerous memorable moments, Croatia is an incredibly diverse and interesting country. The overall welcome was warm and friendly, the people have great national pride and an inherent need to present themselves and their environment as being safe, beautiful, incredibly clean and welcoming to visitors from any part of the world. Discovering the coastal towns from Jezera down to Dubrovnik has been a particular highlight, particularly Primosten and Brela to name but two. Equally walking around the interior national park at Plitvice and being able to truly immerse yourself in the splendour of the spectacular waterfalls and lakes was an absolute privilege. It is very rare you are able to access such beautiful places so intimately. My favourite discovery of all was the little sleepy town of Vrboska on the island of Hvar. Colloquially known as "Little Venice" as a result of the presence of several small bridges over the water, this small town is a hidden gem sitting at the end of a beautiful cove awaiting discovery by those fortunate enough to find it.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
My overriding advice would be to eat at the local Konobas rather than the larger restaurants; they serve locally produced, freshly cooked foods and are always accommodating. As a vegetarian, it can be problematic to find menus that explicitly list vegetarian meals, however if you mention to the waiter that you don't eat meat or fish etc, they will go out of their way to bring you something to please you, and it will. Go off the beaten track, explore, explore, explore. We discovered so many beautiful places by simply turning down side streets from the main roads, parking the car and following our instincts. The roads are very well laid out, generally in good condition and usually sign posted pretty well. Do a little bit of research prior to visiting each location and decide exactly what you want to see to ensure you don't miss anything out. This way you always tick the important things off the list and also have time to find new places. Check the weather forecasts and be prepared with clothing layers at the beginning/end of the vacation season, we were inadequately prepared for some of the cooler/rainier days.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
We made sure our footprint was minimal and we spread our consumer spending around to what appeared to be locally owned businesses. I would say that the itinerary and accommodation was planned that way overall and that worked very well.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
I would rate this vacation extremely well overall. A couple of the hotels were of a lower standard which was unfortunate, however the efficient organisation, excellent, diverse itinerary, and clear instructions and information compensated to some degree. I would most definitely recommend your company's services to others (and have already), as the organisation and facilitation of our travels was completely flawless. The welcome and the friendliness of everyone we met. The scenery is stunning as is the food and wine. Everywhere we stayed was perfect - Trogir and Mali Ston especially as were the hill towns of Istria.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Driving is easy - keep off the motorways if possible to see the best of the countryside. Make sure you get to Plitvice early to avoid crowds and stay until closing the evening light is beautiful. Don't opt to stay in Split - Trogir is the perfect spot - a lovely boat trip to Split for the day and back to quieter Trogir for a meal in the evening. When traveling south from Hvar, and to avoid the Neum strip give yourself plenty of time for the ferry at Sucaraj as there can be long queues, then it's a short drive to Ploce for the ferry to Trpanj and a beautiful drive down the peninsula to Ston - not to be missed. Dubrovnik - if possible opt to stay within walking distance from the old city. It gives you the best options for early morning and evening walks which avoid the cruise ship crowds. It was nice to stroll back to the hotel rather than look for bus or taxi if staying north of the city..3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
I think the trip certainly benefited local people as we only stayed and ate in small establishments. Our souvenir purchases were done at roadside stalls - honey, truffle oil, fig jam and fig cake. Dubrovnik was quite expensive, but it is catering for a different type of tourist. We did however manage to find smaller off the cruise-ship trail place to eat.4. 1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
Difficult to single in on any one thing, there were so many highlights - Croatia is such a beautiful country, I genuinely loved every stop on our itinerary. Running out of Diesel on the way to Motovun was certainly memorable, not for the right reasons. The helpful vertically challenging shortcuts that our "possessed" satnav sent us on in the oversized hire-car were also stunning and memorable, although I will also be happy not to repeat! Possibly my favourite moment was during the first evening on Mljet - having arrived at about 11, we had had a lazy day, catching up on a bit of reading, swimming in the sea, eating and drinking, and it wasn't until early evening that I finally took the trail down into the natural park - and it really took my breath away - the sun catching in the lush green forest and glowing opalescent turquoise water - quite literally a piece of heaven on earth.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Read the literature and go over the local maps that the vacation providers send you - they really have done their homework. In my usual haste, I often hadn't, so for example, arriving in Trogir, where parking is a nightmare and there was no vehicular access to the hotel, overshooting the suggested municipal car-park meant that we wasted about an hour then trying to extricate ourselves from the wrong side of the port! Similarly, not reading the arrangements for Motovun, after earlier running out of diesel, this also lead to a stressful extraction and culminated in us carrying our heavy luggage more than a kilometre up the steep cobbled street (and having a severe sense of humour failure!) when there was really no need. With regards running out of diesel, also note that hire cars are not provided with a full tank of fuel - dur! For our hirecar, we were given a "significant upgrade" (clearly the only vehicle on site in Pula) - however this was a large, unwieldy estate/people carrier - Because you will often be tackling small, windy and busy locations, I would recommend a smaller vehicle. However our hire car rep at Pula is totally forgiven, and was the unsung hero of our vacation, coming to rescue us within an hour of running out of fuel, charging a diminutive amount that could barely have been worth his while. He also gave us the satnav at no cost - which is essential if you plan to visit Zagreb. With regards the number of stops on our trip, we did end up having ~ 3 one night stopovers, which probably isn't advisable. It was terrible having to leave the absolutely gorgeous hotel in Motovun after just one brief evening - and would have been nice to have had more time in Istria - but what to leave out? If I was forced to change my itinerary, perhaps the only omission might be Zagreb - a beautiful, but not outstanding capital city - slightly oppressive in 39 degrees heat - and a lot of traffic. We also had 3 nights in Dubrovnik, mainly due to my request to have an extra day to make a day-trip to Mostar - in fact, after all the traveling, the last thing I wanted to do at that stage was visit another country/site, and in fact an extra day on Mljet would have been divine. My advice overall would be to visit and enjoy Croatia. Amazing.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Definitely, although I don't think we claim having a big fat diesel vehicle for 8 days was particularly environmentally friendly - but it was fun, and I don't think we could have packed as much in if we travelled on public transport. We stayed in small, family-run hotels and ate exclusively Croatian and local where possible - we found that food and drink was wholesome, unpretentious and affordable, and the local wines were excellent. Tourism is clearly so important to the Croatians, and the younger generation have clearly had customer service drummed into them, so I did feel our money mattered. Environmental impact is questionable, as we were tourists after all, but by behaving responsibly, supporting the excellent Croatian National park system (which in itself regulates human impacts in wilderness areas), and using public transport wherever possible, I think we managed to minimise our footprint.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Excellent. The vacation provider were attentive and responsive when listening to my many requests and putting together my package (always slightly problematic as a single Dad with two older teens)- and even got my ferry tickets printed out and sent to our first hotel when my printer went into meltdown just before we were due to depart! Croatia offers an incredible diversity of landscapes and historical sites, all within attainable distances, and I loved every single place we visited. Great food and drink, inexpensive, wildlife and thrills as necessary, and contrary to what many of the guidebooks said, we found the majority of Croatians to be warm, big hearted and helpful (notable exception - the almost hysterically rude guy in the ticket office in Plitvice National park - but you also need those for vacation memories). Several,including Plitvice Lakes National Park which is simply stunning, but Krka Park is also not to be missed. The drive to Hvar Town on the island of Hvar is similarly stunning. Bring a GPS, you'll need it. Navigating to some locations would be a real challenge without, sometimes because parking is tricky. Our Tom Tom did a perfect job of guiding us to our destinations. Hotel Zagreb in Dubrovnick for example has very limited parking and would be difficult to find. If staying in old towns like Hvar, follow the advice of contacting the hotel for assistance. They are very willing to help.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
All the accomodations were smaller establishments with local staffing, although in some cases I am unsure of their ownership. The economy in Croatia is not very strong and young people in particular have a difficult time. The government could do much more to improve infrastructure and encourage things like recycling. Politics aside, conditions seem to be slowly improving and there is evidence of EU participation in a number of projects. Overall, the highways and even minor roadways are in excellent condition.4. Being up on a ridge during a Bora wind blast. Difficult to stand up. Makes you appreciate why some of the islands lack vegetation on the windward side. Aside from that,the Plitvice Lakes exceeded our expectations to a considerable degree. Made all the more impressive by reason of it raining lightly for the two days we were there, which resulted in a lot of flowing water and I adding to the effect.2. Don't stay on the mainland; make sure you take some ferries to the offshore islands. Then travel the length of the island to catch a ferry to the next island or back to the mainland. Driving on the open roads is simple and easy. Through the towns can a little more nerve racking. Having a couple of nights in each place helped keep the pace realistic. Be prepared for limited ability for laundry other than the hotel services. Having 3 nights in Trogir was a little more than needed and would have been better 3 nights based in or nearer to Split as this was where most sights were.3.
