1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Visiting the cemetery where Fidel Castro is buried. Cuban families lined up to have photos taken in front of his grave. They were so quiet and respectful as they waited in line, and when their turn came, posed proudly with solemn faces, in front of the stone with the marker that reads simply, "Fidel". It was touching, and broadened my understanding of Cuba.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

It helps to read up on Cuban history before hand. Having an understanding of the conditions before the Revolution helps put the accomplishments of the Revolution in perspective.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, definitely benefited local people. Staying in Casa Particulares was fun! As far as reducing environmental impacts, I'm not sure - I consumed a lot of bottled water while I was there.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Excellent.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Memorable: Visiting both Che's mausoleum and the cemetery where Fidel's remains are entombed. Most fun was sitting on the steps at the Mayor's square in Trinidad, sipping Kanchechera (plz correct the spelling) and swaying to live music.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Come prepared to dance at all times. Bring some condiments for your food at homestays, since nothing but garlic, onions and salt are available due to US imposed sanctions.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Homestays and guides and taxi drivers are all local people and they really benefit from this kind of tourism

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

You need to standardise the breakfast across all homestays. It was very difficult with my allergies.

Read the operator's response here:

We are delighted that you enjoyed your trip and that you felt that local people benefited from this type of tourism. We are careful to include as many local providers as possible which ensures that money goes into the local economy, but we cannot standardise meals provided in homestay accommodation as the food is prepared by individual hosts. Cuba has some food shortages in some areas of the country some of the time, and much of the fresh food is available only seasonally and not all over the country at the same time either, so it would be an impossible task to try and standardise breakfasts or any other meals. We passed on details of your allergies to all of the homestays where you were staying and the hosts would therefore have been aware of the type of food to avoid serving. We are very pleased that your memorable moments included locations associated with the Cuban Revolution and also live music as these are undoubtedly key elements of any trip to Cuba.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Meeting the warm, friendly people in cuba, our hosts at home stays and our wonderful guides. The hiking was great too.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

The exchange rate in cuba is not good for Americans so bring extra money as you can't use cards.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I hope it benefited them. I know they appreciated the tips. The single use water bottle issue will be a problem quickly as the infrastructure probably can't handle the amount of tourists.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

It was an amazing experience. Well organized, beautiful country and people. We enjoyed every minute.
