HI Alison, thanks you for your kind rating and review and direct comments to us that your vacation 'exceeded expectations'! We're really glad your family loved Borneo. I'm sorry that the benefits to the local community weren't immedaiately obvious and we are making efforts this year to highlight the postitive impacts to our clients so you can observe your positive contribution as you travel around Borneo. For example, your tour in Sepilok includes a visit to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabiliation Centre and the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, where your admission alone directly contributes to the protection and conservation of these precious animals. Also, the lodges we choose on the Kinabatangan are very sensitive not only to the local villagers around them (including the optional visit to meet and engage with the lremote community), but made a conscious choice that most of their lodge rooms are designed to exist without air-conditioning (with a few exceptions but we choose not to promote it!) Not only has AC been shown to cause shock to our bodies when we are constantly in and out of very cold/very hot and humid conditions, the general reduction of energy use is something we try and encourage to benefit the planet. Essentially, without using AC, we find that we adjust better to the local conditions and overall find a level of comfort to enjoy our jungle experiences more quickly! Borneo is certainly a rather hot, humid and tropical climate year round and it does take a little getting used to but we know the benefits of visiting this beautiful area are worth the adjustments! Thank you again for taking the time to review!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
So many to choose from! I think being lucky enough to not only see the Borneo Pygmy elephants, but to see the herd swim across the river in front of us was our highlight.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Get to know you local guide. We had some great conversations with ours and discovered many things about his life and that of the local people as well as a wealth of information about the wildlife. Take a good torch, binoculars and plenty of bug spray3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes. Many of the staff at the river lodges were from the surrounding villages giving employment to the community. We had lunch at a house in the village opposite our river lodge. It was well explained how this relationship benefits the villagers and the lodge (who buy fish from the village fishermen). The toiletries at the lodges were all environmentally friendly. The orangutan and sun bear sanctuaries supported conservation and educate visitors too.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Difficult to pinpoint a most memorable part. The Jungle, Abai Lodges and MY Nature resort and all the adventures we experienced there were amazing, Overwhelming and incredible. Each part had a highlight, the wildlife was amazing, the people were friendly and attentive, the connections and transport was on time, helpful, the accommodation was beautiful and everyone seemed to go the extra mile to make us feel welcome and well looked after.2. 1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
Seeing a orangutan with a baby in the wild for the first time2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Take plenty of cash due to several lodges only taking care payment for over 100 ringgit. Always apply insect repellent regardless of time of day. Bring lots of light multiple wear clothing due to multiple changes per day3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Not really due to the amount of plastic in the water which nobody seems to be making an effort to clear up. Lunch in the village is a great idea but could be made better if we got to see the village and speak to villagers or take part in an activity that would positively impact the village.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
4 out of 5 . It was a great experience but is made on how enthusiastic your guides are and we really only had 1 who I wish we had for the whole trip (Eric at kinabatangan lodge )Read the operator's response here:
Hi Sarah, thanks for your comments and I'm really thrilled you had some memorable moments in Borneo. It's been a long busy season as travel has returned to the region and Eric has always been a shining star, so i'm glad you were able to spend time with him. Regarding your point about the plastic, it is a difficult situation and many of the resorts put as much resource as possible into cleaning this up. Unfortunately, the mess is often not their waste, but still lands at their door. Local plastic pollution is often dumped by the poorest of communities and education is a major factor in reducing this...although sadly education levels dropped among the people who needed it most during the pandemic. It can take some time for the situation to improve. Meanwhile, I did look into your trip to Abai as many clients previously have commented on having a positive engaging experience with the villagers. The previous tree planting project has been paused due to lack of available space, but the community are preparing to launch next season's 'Most beautiful House' competition. Although these villagers have very little financial income, this community project is a lovely way for the residents to decorate and instill pride in their homes, while offering a more interesting experience for visitors. It has proved to be very popular in previous years! Thanks again for your comments and best wishes, Felicia.

It was all memorable and exciting.....from beginning to end it was amazing!!!2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Get in touch, get the experts to help you, tell them what you want, they will come up with a plan. Do IT!!!!!3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes, I think it did. You saw how many local people were employed to provide the hospitality services, and service/tours given. Many jobs were created to provide the services offered. Tours were filled by a mix of people from different agencies to ensure they were full and limit the effect upon the environment. The places stayed offered full services but encouraged guests to limit their use of laundry services. Some provided environmentally friendly toiletries to limit the use of polluting toiletries. Tours were given to local conservation projects to help support them. Tours happened with respect for the environment and wildlife around.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
This was my first vacation in many years. It fulfilled my dreams and expectations from the moment I got off the plane. I was very nervous and apprehensive traveling on my own for the first time in 15 years. The planning and organisation by the tour operator and the partners in Borneo made it easy and the best experience I could have wished for. Even when my phone stopped (minor disaster with serious issues) was resolved quickly and easily with one phone call from the accommodation. The only thing that would make it better was for it to be longer and to see more......hopefully in the future!Anne John review 7 Aug 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
For me it was definitely spotting all the wildlife on the sunset and sunrise jungle river cruises - proboscis monkeys, wild Orangutan, fireflies and a crocodile to name but a few. My daughter says for her it was taking a half day scuba diving course on Guya Island and diving down 14m to see a ship wreck.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Remember to pack your bug spray & use it. Take in every last minute of this amazing experience. Chat to the local guides and get to know them. They appreciate visitors taking an interest in their culture and country. Ask lots of questions. Be brave and adventurous. Try things you wouldn't normally do. Enjoy it all!3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
My 21 yr old daughter feels it somewhat supported conservation of land and marine animals, however she felt slight concerns about conservation of marine plants such as coral being affected by water sports and human activity. I hope that tourism benefits the local people well and that money is fairly distributed. She also noticed certain environmental impacts such as a lot of single use plastic particularly water bottles at Gayana Marine Resort which we tried to avoid where possible. Air travel could also maybe have been reduced around Sabah - traveling by land rather than flying ( although we appreciate it is about a 7 hr drive )4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
I cannot fault the vacation overall. It was simply amazing. Incredibly well organised down to every last detail. I would not hesitate to recommend Responsible Travel and their partners on the ground to all my friends and family. And I will certainly use them again in the future. Also, I found the trip exceptionally good value for money. Thank you for enriching my life!Read the operator's response here:
Hi Justine, thanks for your lovely comments and the personal chats we've had since your return. It's great that your daughter is conscious of the environmental practices around her and we liaise frequently with the lodges we use in Borneo. Since the pandemic, i'm afraid a lot has changed and your return to the country just weeks after it's reopening is the very best we can do to contribute and improve sustainable practices that were making great strides pre-2020. For example, the tree planting programme you should have enjoyed in Abai is temporarily on hold due to villagers preferring not to welcome foreign guests into their homes at this point in time. The resorts around Gaya Island are actively involved in coral re-planting projects and as motorised water sports are limited, the hope is that reef damage is minimalised. These resorts used to be foreward leaders in the reduction of single use plastic so it's disappointing that they've had to revert to plastic water bottles again. We hope they will soon be in a position to restart their sustainability efforts as soon as the resorts are financialy stable and capable of delivering the same standard of service in a more environmentally friendly way. They truly appreciate your support though and we will work with them to assist in any way possible.

Absolutely amazingRead the operator's response here:
Hi Karen,
We're so pleased you had an amazing time in Borneo. As the country has recently reopened, your visit means a lot to the local people and wildlife conservation. Entry fees at Sepilok Orangutan Conservancy and the Sunbear Centre contribute directly to their rehabilitation and your stay at Selingan Turtle Island is at a research center that exists purely to assist turtle conservation. Unfortunately, since the pandemic, the tree planting activity at Abai is
not currently available as a precautionary measure to protect the villagers - we hope to see this programme up and running as soon as it is safe! Lastly, I hope your stay at the island resort demonstrated the work that goes on to protect the marine life around Borneo, as well as their ongoing efforts to reduce plastic use and use local produce in the kitchen. Unfortunately, sustainability efforts in many countries have been hampered by the emergency response
required to handle the pandemic, but your choice to use a responsible tourism operator will contribute and help rejuvenate efforts to preserve a healthier
environment.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
It has to be our encounter with the orang-utans at Sepilok rehabilitation center, particularly when a mother and baby stepped out in front of us on the walkway and allowed us to walk casually behind them for over 40 minutes, just breathtaking2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Make time to relax and reflect, we wish we’d built in an extra day to chill and reflect at every lodge and island we visited as we’d packed so much in and there was so much to see and do from dawn to dusk Each lodge was different but equally unique in terms of experiences but I think Abai lodge was the top of our list3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes our visit to local families across the river at Abai lodge and our own further learning of the impact on the environment of palm oil deforestation and how we can make a difference4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
Spotting wild orangutans in Sepilok at the Rainforest Discovery Centre.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Bring LOTS of insect repellent. If you stay at Gaya Island resort, alcoholic drinks are quite expensive. 60 MR for a glass of wine (approx £12). This wasn't the case elsewhere, but I would strongly advise popping to a supermarket before your transfer to the island to stock up on supplies.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Certainly: all of our guides were local Malaysians and seemed passionate about conservation and what they did. All the lodges were anti-plastic.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
We had the most incredible time. It was a life-changing experience: cruising the river and spotting fireflies, crocodiles and proboscis monkeys; exploring the rainforest boardwalks and visiting the sun bear and orangutan rescue centers.Marloes Dijkstra review 12 May 2019
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
The overall vacation was a great success but going into the jungle by small boat and seeing all the wildlife in their natural habitat was truly amazing. Staying at Gaya Island (resort) at the end of our trip was also a great way to end our vacations, this way we had the perfect combination between city (Kota Kinabalu), jungle, wildlife and beach!2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Be patient! You do spend quite a lot of time on boats searching for animals, sometimes with little luck. Also, if you are looking for an active vacation (lots of walking) this might not be for you as, especially in the jungle lodges, you cannot go and wander around by yourselves. Its however a great vacation to do with children. We went with an almost 6 yr old and 13 yr old, they both enjoyed themselves enormously.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
All of our guides, drivers ect were locals and very knowledgeable, that was great. When we took the boat into the jungle we were handed water bottles that we could use for a few days and easily refill in our rooms, so this avoided having to buy plastic bottles. We also had a lovely lunch at a local jungle village.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Excellent! the overall organization was flawless, from start to finish. The accommodation were great and of good quality. Overall the trip was exactly what we had hoped for.Sophie Ashworth review 16 Apr 2019

Just being in and around all of the natural wildlife - seeing wild orangutans after learning about the rehabilitation center, glimpsing Pygmy elephants through the bush along the river, watching the monkeys playing and going about their day-to-day lives.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Do it! Be prepared for no wifi in some places and no air conditioner in other places but the entire experience is so so so worth it!3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes, definitely - through the information which is passed on to the travelers and the fact that the tourist lodges are run by the local people.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
We loved every part of our vacation. We loved the authenticity of the places we stayed at, the people, the food and the cultural exposure. The stay at the Rungus longhouse was very memorable, especially because we had a fantastic guide (Reynold) that took us there and back. He was so knowledgeable about Borneo and we learned such a lot from him. Although we enjoyed Gaya island, we felt that it was too commercial and developed in comparison to the former part of the vacation. In hindsight, I would have preferred to rather stay at one of the Islands close to Sandakan, like Lankayan island.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
In our view, a visit to Danum Valley is a must of you really want to see and experience the primary forests of Borneo. Although we went to Tabin and saw a lot, I was perturbed about the surrounding palm oil plantations and that took away from the experience of a pristine forest. We also visited the Mari Mari Cultural village and the various markets in KK which we enjoyed a lot, so time in KK is important. We did a day trip to the various islands close to KK, and it was a most unpleasant experience. These islands are trampled by tourists. I would not spend time and money on such an excursion. For people also interested in a true nature experience, I would recommend that a trip to Mulu Island is proposed as an alternative to Gaya island.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes, in my view tourism creates job opportunities for local people. It certainly also creates awareness around the importance for environmental conservation, since it emphasizes the importance of eco-tourism for the local economy. However, I am mindful of the amount of waste generated by tourists and also the use of water for the washing of towels etc. I would encourage tourists not to easily accept plastic bags, bring their own water bottles to refill (there is always water available for drinking at the hotels and resorts) and to save on the use of towels.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
We had a most memorable vacation. Everything was so well organized. I am most impressed by the local people and their treatment of tourists. The guides were also all very good and knowledgeable and proficient in English. These are hard working people which we admire for their effort and enthusiasm.Lesley Selby review 14 Oct 2018
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
We loved everything about this vacation: the relaxation of Gaya Island, the wildlife at the different lodges, especially seeing orangutans in the wild. We saw 6 orangutans in the wild, and seeing a mother making a nest for the night while her youngster watched us and messed around like a little kid was enchanting. Traveling on the river at dusk, seeing fireflies, fruit bats, and then the night sky in all its glory with the milkyway. Seeing my new favourite animal the Malay civet with beautiful markings creeping through the undergrowth in the evening.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Take good binoculars.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
We had lunch at a villager's house and I understand that they are paid for this service. Throughout the trip the guides were at pains to explain about local conservation efforts.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Seeing a young orangutan with its 6 day old baby just 3 feet in front of us on the walkway at the sun bear conservation center in Sepilok.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Travel light, shorts and t-shirts are all you need, pack a poncho just in case, but we had no rain. Binoculars are a must. We used jungle formula spray and none of our party of four suffered any bites, we did not need leech socks as most of our exploring was done on a boat on the river.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
We went to a local village for dinner and we purchased some handmade items that they had made from recycled plastic. We also left a donation for the village to help in any way they saw fit.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Loved it, will do it again sometime in the future. From the first idea, to the planning, to the actual vacation was really effortless for us as you done all the work. Well done and thanks.Jon Daulton review 5 Sep 2018

Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
I would say that it did, I would raise questions of the conversation cost at the Gaya Island Resort as it did not seem as though much was being conserved.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Fantastic, once in a lifetime which I would love to do all over again.Read the operator's response here:
Hi, thanks so much for your valuable feedback and I'm so glad your vacation to Borneo was a great experience. It is sometimes difficult to see where conservation efforts occur - in the case of Gaya Island, the beautiful surroundings you experience are evidence of the work that has gone on - to protect the coral reefs, manage and educate tourists and locals, run school programs, reduce trash, save and protect wildlife, rehabilitate turtles and sea life. In addition to the immediate resort area, the conservation fees are collected and transferred to Sabah Parks to help in preserving the rich ecosystem of the region. Sabah Parks manages, promotes and conducts the administrative works of various terrestrial and marine parks in Sabah, and produces conservation programs and sustainable eco-tourism practices.
Thanks again for traveling with us! Felicia

By being in Borneo, staying in locally owned and run hotels and using local a tour company the money we paid for our trip was mostly going into the local economy and providing employment. The relationship between Abai Jungle lodge and the village on the other side of the river was mutually beneficial. Visiting the local conservation projects prompted debate over the palm oil industry and illustrated the difficult balance that must be achieved in order to maintain a good life for both people and animals.4. Drink plenty of rehydration mix on jungle walk. In Kuching and KK, use the Grab app to book taxis.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
I'm not sure. It employed local people and some aspects of conservation. In Gaya Island we booked a kayak tour with the naturalist, but I gather not many visitors show an interest in this. Taking an interest does help local conservation. efforts.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Very good overall, although Gaya Island was a bit overrated -quite a big resort with a lot of tour groups. Semenggoh isn't very good -far too many tourists and no orang-utans, as they seemed to be bored with the show. Don't recommend. Bako was very good, as was Santubong river cruise. Kuching is quite charming and off the main tourist circuit, though there is not a lot to do there. Danum Valley is definitely the highlight.Pam Doug review 25 Apr 2018

Make sure the domestic flights had less waiting time. It is vital that all accommodation is air conditioned as it is very very hot.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes to local employment, No to the other two.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
A great experience, the local people and guides, staff and everyone we met were the smiliest most polite and helpful we have ever met.Read the operator's response here:
Hi Pam & Doug, Thanks for your review and we’re thrilled you had a lovely time in Borneo. Whilst on vacation it may appear that the environmental benefits are minimal, however by booking with us through Responsible Travel, you contributed in the following ways: We try to take our clients into areas that directly help the local communities there by supporting local trade and livelihoods, bringing economy to rural villages, and as you acknowledged, each part of your trip helps with local employment and the economy. Where possible, we focus on locally owned and managed accommodation. You stayed at Abai Jungle lodge which is an eco-lodge built by the villagers and today is run and operated by local people with all the food coming from the surrounding area, wherever possible. You should have had an opportunity to meet villagers and plant a tree at Abai, which is a direct impact on the local and regional environment.
You also visited Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre and the Sun Bear conservation center where money from you’re your entrance fees is used to help protect and care for endangered and threatened wildlife in Borneo. Furthermore, I believe you chose to adopt an orangutan, which provides money for medical care for the wildlife affected by burning rainforests for palm oil.
We are confident that our local agents do whatever they can to support conservation and the reduction of environmental impacts, where possible. Perhaps we can ask they highlight their efforts more as we really want our guests to feel they are traveling responsibly in such a fragile ecosystem as Borneo.
We thank you for traveling to Borneo on vacation with us, and hope to welcome you back again sometime soon. Best wishes

Orang-utans2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Just check wheat you are signing up for - we were added to a group of Virgin Vacation travelers so it was more like a package vacation than an independent trip which is what we were hoping to undertake, and the group moved at the rate of the least able person, so experiences were limited by this.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
At times - Abai lodge yes - not so sure in other locations4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Interesting - but sanitised - no 'raw' experiences.Read the operator's response here:
Hi, and thanks for submitting your review. We are sorry your expectations of Borneo weren't met as we generally have nothing but excellent feedback on this tour. As we discussed on your return, it was unfortunate that your visit to certain lodges coincided with a large party booked by another operator, which we couldn't have known, but your trip was independently booked and planned so your movements around the rest of Borneo were individually coordinated. Sometimes in peak season, lodges are fully booked by other guests on similar itineraries, so you will overlap and encounter other groups of travelers.
With regards to the environmental impact, it is a shame you didn't see how your vacation contributes. As you know, even though the tree-planting at Abai is currently on hold as the project has been a success and the assigned land is now full, your visit still contributes to the upkeep of this project, as well as further education in the region. Visiting the families helps them, and the wider community recognise the importance of tourism and how crucial it is to make choices to preserve their ecosystem locally, so tourists will continue to visit and fund their economy. Nearby, I believe you visited Sepilok, where the famous orangutan and sun bear sanctuary rescues orphaned and injured animals with the aim of recovery and return to the wild. Finally, your stay at Gaya Island pays to help preserve the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, where the resort is located. The contribution helps with clean up, wildlife protection and local education, as well as preserving the clean waters and healthy coral gardens that provide the excellent snorkelling in the area. I hope you got chance to visit the naturalist and marine biologist at Gaya Island who are always delighted to tell you about the many other programmes they are working on to conserve the local environment (turtle conservation, coral planting, preserving the '7 Wonders of Gaya' programme, etc
We do value your comments, and continuously work to deliver a Borneo experience that delights our guests. Your feedback helps us to focus on the areas that might need more attention, so we appreciate hearing about anything else we can do for improvement. Thanks and best wishes

The river cruises at Abai Lodge was the most memorable. Seeing so many of what we were told was hard to see, especially the elephants, and doing the safari with a group of people with great sense of humour, including the guide.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
If you go alone, be prepared to have to pay a little extra for some activities because it is just you.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
There was an element of that with the tree planting, and the tourism employing locals.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
It was incredible. I especially liked the fact I had the transfers all organised for me so didn't have to think, and that the accommodation level just got better and better!Brian Hill review 8 Nov 2017

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
Our stay at Abai Jungle Lodge was definitely the most memorable and exciting part of our trip. The location alongside the Kinabatangan River was incredible and it was a real privilege to be able to sleep on the outskirts of the jungle, listening to the sounds of animals all around us. We had proboscis monkeys right outside our lodge and macaques hanging around at breakfast, as well as Junior, the wild boar (a frequent visitor here) and his piglets. We loved every aspect of our time here, from the dawn and dusk boat trips to the night walks around the boardwalks. In addition, the lodges themselves were extremely comfortable and all the staff at the resort were brilliant. Also, as a vegetarian, I was very impressed with the food on offer for me as I had been worried there wouldn't be much choice! The guides from SI tours in particular went above and beyond to ensure everyone had the best experience - they were very knowledgeable, friendly, fun and tried extremely hard to make sure we saw as much wildlife as possible. I'll never forgot the moment they spotted wild orangutans for us on the river.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
I would recommend that other travelers make the most of all the additional wildlife activities available at every stage of the trip. In particular, I would recommend booking the night walks at Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary and Sepilok Rainforest Discovery Centre, as well as visiting the nature reserve at Rasa Ria Resort. At the latter, we did both a daytime jungle walk and a night walk and both were fantastic. The guides were very good and made the experience a lot of fun. Across all these walks we saw flying squirrels, a slow loris, a binturong, a stink badger and many reptiles, birds and insects. Well worth it! Also, if you have free time at Kota Kinabalu, I would recommend visiting the night market. Finally, one tip for Sepilok - try to go to the afternoon orangutan feeding if you can. It's a lot less busy as busloads of tourists come for the morning one, so we made the most of staying nearby to switch our itinerary around and start with the Sun Bear sanctuary instead.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
To some extent, I believe our stay at Abai helped to benefit the local village. We took part in a tree planting project there, made a contribution and visited the village. As far as I understand it, the Abai resort sources fish and vegetables from the local village, which obviously helps them too and saves them from having to travel to Sandakan to sell their wares. We also adopted an orangutan from the sanctuary and our entry fees to all the sanctuaries in Sepilok, as well as at the nature reserve in Rasa Ria, also hopefully went towards future conservation. Obviously, we would have liked to have done more and tourism of any kind obviously has some environmental impact, but we were pleased to book with ethical operators.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
For us, it was the vacation of a lifetime and certainly didn't disappoint. We would love to go back!Anthony Mills review 4 Sep 2017
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
The adult male Orangutan we saw on our boat trip from Abai jungle lodge to Kinabatagan jungle lodge and the pygmy elephants we saw at the riverside on our first boat cruise and much more besides!! Our paths crossed with a number of families and honeymooners on similar trips, talking to them and learning their experiences of Borneo only enhanced our enjoyment of the vacation. The local guides were extremely knowledgeable about their habitat and answered all questions regarding the environment and the wildlife.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
You are always on the go in the rainforest with activities planned for you to do, by the time you reach Gaya island you will have earned the downtime to relax. Take plenty of mosquito repellent for the rain forest and plenty of sun cream for the scorching sun of Gaya Island.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
We planted a tree with the proceeds going back to the local villages and a lot of the guides are from the forest. Having spoken to the guides the village way of life is declining as children become more educated and move to the cities and towns. The guides we met in the Tabin wildlife reserve were educated, from the forest and were passionate about what they did. The balance between the tourist impact and that of the palm oil companies is a fine balance but all sides appear to be working together to ensure the sustainability of the environment.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
The whole family had a fantastic time, we met lots of different people, be it guides and fellow tourists. We are now considering where to head for next year.Marian Little review 5 Aug 2017
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
So many memorable moments - Sepilok and the Kinabatangan river trips to view the wildlife were totally unforgettable. Watching from the boat as an orangutan built its nest for the night, and the family squabbles of the proboscis monkeys. Our family (3 teenagers) did snorkelling for the first time on Gaya, and loved it. We saw so much with the help of the very knowledgeable local guides. The local transfers were all arranged perfectly - not a single hitch. We stopped over in Singapore on the way - lots to see and do, Gardens in the Bay were amazing.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Spend as long as you can in the rainforest. Animals don't necessarily work to your schedule! Do the night tour of the Rainforest Discovery Centre at Sepilok if you can.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes, if you don't count the air miles to get there. It was good to see how local companies were used, and they were excellent.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Be prepared for rain as well as sun and take good binoculars and cameras (smart phones won't get everything you want to).3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
It certainly provides an income for local people and supports conservation, but we were concerned both at the level of rubbish in the Kingabatangan River and the huge number of tourist boats (some holding up to 100 people and others refusing to hold back and respect the animals' space) that were trying to "chase" the elephants.4. Borneo isn't as scary as some websites make out. The people are welcoming, almost everyone speaks English. Don't worry about leeches we saw 2 in 2 weeks. Wear deet and the creepy crawlies don't bother you. Don't waste money on clothing and shoes wear anything loose and comfortable and some old trainers. If you need wellies the lodge will have them. It's hot but once you're under the trees is comfortable. Almost every other traveler had suitcases we took backpacks and there was no need to. Enjoy every minute!3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
It supported conservation when we paid to enter spilok orangutan and sun bear center. We planted a tree and paid for a certificate which went to the locals. The people working at the lodges were locals too.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Staying in Abai lodge and sailing up the Kinabatangan river watching wildlife in their natural habitat. It was perfect. Excellent boat driver and guide. So friendly they were like a friend. Punctual knowledgeable and even provided tea and coffee and biscuits on every boat journey. Seeing a wild Orangutan swinging through the trees carrying a baby was magical as were the elephants on the river bank, the Proboscis Monkeys, birds and night time fireflies. It was magical.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
No shoes allowed in Abai restaurant. Make sure you have repellent on bare feet. I was bitten, the only place not covered. No need for fancy clothes. Trousers, shirts, buy Nosiguard clothing with built in repellent. Flip flops are fine in the boat. Don't worry about getting in and out of the boat, help is at hand. Try all the lodges. If you do 5 star after this you will want to be back in the sheer simplicity of the jungle life.Invest in a good camera. Digital don't capture the moment. In hindsight we wished we'd bought a bridge camera although we do have really good pictures. Nobody is touting for tips. We gave the boat driver and guide a well deserved tip.Enjoy every second. Everyone is so professional and friendly.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes. The tree planting was brilliant. I didn't understand the concept until our guide explained how by us planting the tree it gave money to the local people who grew them. They are transplanted near the river which brings wildlife nearer for tourists. We got a certificate and can check on our trees progress. The locals caught fish and prawns and sold it to the Lodge. We had lunch in the village. The food was prepared by locals and they were paid for making our lunch putting money back to the locals.4. Don't bother with the leech socks, just wear long trousers and socks. Make sure you have wick away trousers and shirts. Buy rubber shoes with good grip (like crocks) sufficient to walk shin deep in rocky steams and climb up muddy banks. Buy 50+% deet insect repellent (good to remove leeches) and bite and string relief spray. A filtered water bottle is useful too. Cheap waterproof (like at festivals) is far better than a waterproof jacket.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
