1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
From the warm welcome to their home by Matko and Marina, to the delicious meals and the beautiful , comfortable, spacious Villa, it was a wonderfully memorable week. The morning Yoga and activities lead by Maya were exactly what I hoped. To then have the afternoons to enjoy the beautiful beaches and relax was perfect.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Following the tips I took from previous travelers, definately swim shoes are a must and I did find it useful having my cycling gloves when out on the Kayak. Do the Boat trip around the island if you have the opportunity.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes, Matko and Marina used fresh local fruit and vegetables for the healthy homemade meals, The local wine was excellent. I really enjoy trying home cooking where ever I go and Marina's recipies were excellent.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
As a single traveler, I found this vacation to be exactly what i hoped. A chance to partake in activities and also relax. The large family style dining was super as you got to chat with the other guests. Matko and Marina were such fantastic hosts I hope to get back there again.David Smart review 17 Sep 2023
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
The relaxed way of life on Vis that is so infectious - the perfect antidote to the stress of everyday life. And beautiful Silver (Srebrena) beach!2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Take advantage of Matko's local knowledge to get the most from the vacation, and be flexible with your activities.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes. Vis is a small island and doesn't yet have the same level of tourism as other islands nearby. But it has great local resources and a good environmental approach.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Fantastic! Matko and Marina are excellent hosts, and Maja is superb at organising the activities. They are so friendly and accommodating and do whatever they can to give their guests the best possible vacation. All the food is local, freshly prepared and delicious. They have all the equipment and kit that you need for the various activities, and they know the island inside out. I would recommend this to anyone (with or without kids) that wants a vacation combining fun activities with blissful relaxation.Monica Trivedi review 11 Sep 2023

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
My husband and I loved the beautiful, relaxed and unspoilt nature of Vis and the stunningly clear sea water, perfect for kayaking, and snorkelling. I couldn't believe how green the island was when traveling around it. The sea life was amazing to see and the sea safe for both young families and strong swimmers to explore. It has a really high salt content, which greatly aids bouyancy and really helped me as I'm not confident swimming in the sea. I spent hours snorkelling on this vacation. We love discovering the great outdoors (countryside, rivers, seas and cities) and are fairly independent travelers, but this vacation we desperately needed to relax and not have to make decisions about anything (where to stay, what to eat, what to do, where to visit). We definitely chose the right vacation, staying with local islander Matko and his family in their relaxing villa. Marina is lovely and a fantastic cook and Matko is generous and knowledgable and able to answer all your questions and tailor the vacation to you, ensuring all your needs are met. We felt we were in safe hands with Maja, our activity leader. She was gentle and patient and gave us a perfect taste of the island, from practising yoga early in the morning in the nearby woody area, to giving tips for the best places to sea swim; from taking us kayaking and exploring the beautiful unspoiled local beaches to leading evening walks to discover amazing viewpoints of the island - always with informative local history. Delicious evening homemade meals on the terrace with spectacular views of the sea were the best way to round off an active day!2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
To get the most out of your vacation, don't be shy to speak up about what you would like to do/eat/see/ by talking to Matko. He knows the island inside out, listens to you and recommends things perfectly matched to you. Try yoga, it is an amazing way to start the morning. No previous experience needed. Maja is gentle and experienced and very intuiative and she adapts the practise to you. Try kayaking, it is a fantastic way to explore the beaches and the sea! Listen to Matko and Maja's tips. If it is 30 degrees plus in midsummer, realistically you won't be cycling across the very hilly island in the midday sun! Listen to yourself: the vacation goes at your pace so speak up about what you would like to do, take a siesta to avoid the intense heat midday in summer. Water shoes are a must as the beaches are mainly pebbly and it makes it easier getting in and out of the kayak and the sea. Take plenty of euros (cash) as not all the beach restaurants accept cards (there are plenty of ATMs on the mainland and in Vis town and Komiža, here they take card too). Travel light: all you need is sports clothes and swimwear. We opted for the half board option and visited Komiža and Ston?ica Beach on our day off. Our vacation coincided with another family and they went full board which is probably much easier with children. Be aware you may be sharing the villa with other guests, which is great for sharing experiences. Take insect repellent and bite/antiseptic cream. You won't get bitten inside the villa as it is mosquito proof, but you may if you are outside in the evening. We are new to kayaking, so wore cycling gloves to prevent blisters from the paddles (it worked) and also remember plenty of suncream and a sunhat as you will be out in the sun for several hours kayaking.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
We would like to think so. Staying with Matko in his villa hopefully benefited him and his family. All food was locally sourced and we mainly walked and kayaked, with the odd day of traveling by car or taxi,4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
It was perfect for us. Matko, Maja and Marina were perfect hosts and gave us a great vacation and a fantastic taster of the island, leaving us wanting to return and explore more, all signs of the perfect vacation!Joanna Senior review 19 Jul 2023
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
Swimming and snorkelling in crystal clear waters two minutes walk from where we were staying - so much to see!2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Take the full board option. Matko arranged everything for us and it made the whole thing stress-free and enjoyable. Marina and Matko’s cooking was fantastic and was really good value we thought, plus the bit trip on our day off was brilliant. We also loved yoga with Maya every morning (despite not having done yoga before!)3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
It was lovely to stay with a local family and to find out about this lovely island in a non-touristy way. They buy fresh fruit and veg and bread locally every morning and we ate fresh fish that had just been caught - fabulous4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
Spending time on a quiet, unspoilt, beautiful island and staying with Matko, Marina and their daughters. Our activity guide Maya was a pleasure to spend time with and we were able to decide what we wanted to do each day. The morning yoga sessions in the forest were a wonderful start to each day. The most amazing, plentiful home cooked food!2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Relax and enjoy a wonderful vacation where everything is organised for you. You don't need to worry about taking lots of clothes, just beach wear, shorts, t-shirts etc and a pair of beach shoes. Beach towels are provided. Take a water bottle to refill and take on activities. Take some bug spray.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
We ate and enjoyed local produce and wines. We spent the majority of our time swimming, cycling , walking and kayaking so environmental impact was low.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
We didn't know quite what to expect but our week exceeded our expectations. We stayed on a full board basis and Marina cooked the most wonderful meals, we have never eaten so much! Matko was a fabulous host and chatted to us about our activities daily but also gave us great insight into life on Vis and Split. We thoroughly enjoyed our week, it was exactly what we wanted and would have no hesitation in recommending it to others.Helen Bowman review 6 Sep 2022
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
There were many favorites. I loved the tranquility and esacapism of one to one yoga. The 6 year old loved the swimming pool and playing with our hosts’ twins. The 11 yr old cited meals at the house as a highlight! We all loved Kayaking, and cliff jumping was a favorite for all that did it. The location on the island of Vis and accommodation were brilliant but the absolute star feature of the break was our hosts, Matko and family; and the activity lead, Maya. They were all so lovely and great at what they did.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Do it! We did half board which allows for some exploration of the island and experience of some lovely restaurants. The food in the house was however great. The boat trip was also great for seeing a little more of the island. The yoga was a wonderful experience.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Staying with Matko and family exposed us a little to their position within an island community and in itself was supporting local business.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Superb! We were three adults and three kids (6,11 and 14) and everyone was delighted.Melanie May review 21 Aug 2022
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
The beautiful unspoilt scenery on the island. The fantastic welcome and hospitality from all our hosts.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Bring plenty of sports wear for yoga, kayaking, walking, cycling.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Benefitted local people and employment. Lots of local produce used. Vis is slightly hampered by lack of recycling facilities on the island.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
We had an amazing vacation. Wonderful hosts who went above and beyond to ensure we had the best time. The morning yoga was a real favourite. Lots of choice of activities and a beautiful island - much less busy and therefore unspoilt than other Croatian islands.Dawn Topping review 20 Aug 2022

Snorkelling in the perfect clear waters around the island and seeing starfish in the wild for the first time.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Buy swimming shoes to protect your feet from the sea urchins as there are lots of them.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Local farmer benefited as most of the fruit and vegetables we ate was grown on the island.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
Doing daily yoga under the pine trees near the beach was absolutely magical and so restorative... And then jumping from the cliffs into turquoise blue water with the kids was so much fun and so refreshing.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
You are in great hands! Matko Marina and Maya look after you so well. They are really there to make it work for you so do speak up and tell them what you like and don't like so that they can make it happen - as Matko says, they can do a lot but they are not mindreaders. Also a very practical tip, bring swimming shoes - it's a lot easier to enjoy the beautiful sea if you're not worried about sea urchins.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Matko, Marina and Maya are so proud of their beautiful island. Everyone knows them and everywhere we went we were welcomed. It was great to be able to support other local businesses when we went for dinner or on a boat trip. Vis is a very special place and they are helping to keep the local community thriving.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
This was without doubt the best vacation we've ever had. It was such a luxury to be looked after - cooked tasty, homecooked food every day, shown the best and hidden places of the island, learn about its history. A perfect balance of activity and relaxation in the company of hosts who made us feel part of the family.Luke Smallman review 24 Jul 2022
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
Matko took us on a Military tour which was very exciting, perfect for hard to please teenagers! Swimming and kayaking in such beautiful clear turquoise waters was very special. Lovely swimming all within a few minutes walk. Snorkelling everywhere was lovely, plenty fish, sea cucumbers, caterpillars, anemones, starfish etc. to see. Very comforting to know there is nothing dangerous in the water there. Yoga in the pine and rosemary scented forest every morning with Maja was a great pleasure, Maja is a great yoga teacher and you can take the class as gently or strenuously as you like, a great way to start the day.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
It would be a good idea to bring refillable waterbottles for cycling etc., mosquito repellents and savlon for bites. There's no particular need for fancy clothes or shoes (maybe for the one restaurant night), pack light. Bring books about local history, flora, fauna and sealife, or whatever you are interested in. The island is completely unspoiled by tourism, very quiet, not the place for night life. There is no shop, so bring snacks/sweets, if you need. There is one bar and one restaurant both in beautiful locations, apart from one drink in the bar we didn't try them. Coeliac friendly! One of our sons needs a gluten free diet and Marina and Matko provided fantastic gluten free food including making fresh gf bread when there wasn't any available in the shop. There was no gluten free breakfast cereal so bring some if that's what you like for breakfrast. Marina cleaned a toasted sandwich maker to use a dedicated gf toaster for the week. Gf pancakes for dessert were also particularly well received. For every meal we had too much good food, which was very welcome after an active day especially to hungry teenagers.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Pretty much all the food Matko and Marina prepared for us was local, the fish came in on a boat to the village and the wine was from local island grapes and Matko presses his own olives for olive oil. We went out to eat one night to a lovely fancy restaurant with the most amazing views across the valley. Apart from our jeep military tour we cycled and kayaked everywhere, so overall reasonably low impact environmentally. The island is so unspoiled there are loads of butterflies, bees, birds and wildflowers. There was a swallows nest in the balcony eaves and we watched the chicks fledge while we were there. We didn't have enough time to walk in the woods much but they looked great, a botanists paradise I would think.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Our vacation was one of the most successful vacations we have had with our two teenage sons. Due to the arrangement of the accommodation, I'd recommend taking the entire house with friends or family. The living room was very comfortable and the bedrooms and bathrooms were simple but fine, a clothes horse/towel rack on the balcony would have been handy for beach towels and wet swimsuits. We were very lucky to be the first guests of the season in June so everything was fresh and new, including a lovely brand new swimming pool. Even if you did nothing else you would have a lovely vacation lounging in the pool in the shade of one of the olive trees. Overall a really lovely vacation, very tempted to book for next year too. Many thanks to Maja, Marina and Matko (and of course not forgetting Manuala and Dora too), who gave us a super Croatian welcome and looked after us exceptioanally well.Grace Reinhalter review 18 Jul 2022
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
Home cooked dinner Matko made on our first night at the Villa with tons of amazing appetizers, salad, local wine and of course grilled fish and veggies.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Just to do the trip and enjoy all the activities - yoga daily, boat trip, kayaking, hiking, pool time at the Villa, meals etc.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes, absolutely, feel great supporting the tour operator as Matko's family is from the island and he grew up on Vis. It was nice that Matko is such a local and knew everything and everyone in the island. Happy to do a trip with a family run business.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
10/10 everything was wonderful, communication with the tour operator was smooth, they are friendly reliable, the house is beautiful, the location and proximity to the beach is wonderful and they are so knowledgeable about the island of course as locals.Glenn Perry review 14 Aug 2021

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
So many memories to choose from. We loved the variety of activities on offer and enjoyed starting the day doing yoga under the scented pine trees. Kayaking into a quiet bay where we were the only visitors is a great memory.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Come prepared for a laid back vacation where you make your own evening entertainment. You have to arrange transport out of the village if you want to go to a bar, restaurant or shop. This can be done easily through your host Matko. You will be made to feel like members of the family in this intimate homestead.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
The activities we did were low impact such as cycling, kayaking and walking. All the food we ate was locally procured.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
The island of Vis is a great destination and you cant help but fall in love with the coastal beauty.Joanna Sykes review 21 Sep 2020
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
The beauty of the sea - the clear, warm water was the best thing. Being so close to it from Matko's place was great, but there were many beaches to choose from. My wife rarely swims in the sea as she finds it cold, but she was in it every day - snorkling was great. We took bikes when we felt like it and enjoyed the bike rides. There are a few hills but you can take your own route. We did a couple of hikes too later in the day when it was cooler and I did scuba with Matko on a wreck which was great. 35m There are a lot of wrecks around the island. We did yoga each morning with Maja which was new to me, but not to my wife and we both really enjoyed it. In the forest among the trees. The sea kayaking with Maja was also fun and a lot easier than it would be in places with big swells. Maja looked after us. We also did a boat trip around the island and visited various sites including the blue cave - well worth a visit. Being the setting for a fair bit of Mama Mia 2 wasn't a big draw for me, but i can see why they picked it as a location.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Do it, do it - it's great ! Vis is a lovely place and Matko, Maja and Matko's family make you feel very welcome:) The fact that this was Tito's private army camp for so long gives the island a lot of interest - with nuclear bunkers and camouflaged underground bases. Fascinating3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes in the sense that almost all the food we had was local, though it can't all be, as you can't grow everything on Vis. We had great local fish, meat, pasta and wine and enjoyed it all immensely (and not to forget Marina's apple strudel) . Matko and family made us feel hugely welcome. Vis is not overrun with tourists nor overly developed - I hope that it stays that way4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
We loved it - the weather was great, the hospitality lovely. The flexibility of Matko, Marina and family (and Matko's mum ) and Maja to look after us was really nice. The transfer to the ferry/ island from the airport, in both directions was well organised and stress-free.Roopal Patel review 7 Sep 2020
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
The hospitality was outstanding. Victorijja and Matko (and their families) went out of their way to look after us and make us feel at home. The food and activities gave us a real sense of life on the island. We were able to do as much or as little as we wanted to and never felt under any pressure to join in with activities. We were really well looked after and had an opportunity to really relax. The Yoga with Maya every morning was the perfect start to the day!2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
We went on a half board basis which gave a great balance of really excellent home cooked food and also the opportunity to try the amazing local restaurants. We would definitely recommend a visit to Vis town and Komiza - both are beautiful. The Green Cave by Kayak was a real highlight, as was the military tour with Matko. Cycling through the vineyards and walking in the hills was also amazing - there are so many great things to do here! mainly our advice would be to relax and let the team look after you - eat, relax and enjoy!3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes we were looked after by locals and could see the benefit of our custom on the local economy. We traveled by cycle, kayak or on foot for most journeys as everything is close by.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
This was one of the best family vacations we have ever had. We would definitely recommend to others but hope Vis stays a secret for as long as possible!Paul Tyce review 5 Sep 2020
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
Not having to think about anything ...apart from which restaurant to eat in ! It was great to have two amazing hosts, chefs & activity organisers in Matko & Maja - they simply could not have done more to make us feel welcome & part of their family. The food was superb, fresh & varied & my pescatarian daughter was well catered for - we still talk about the amazing cheesecake that Matko's mum made. Matko very much tailor made our activities on a daily base depending upon how we were feeling on the day & Maya made sure that they worked out for the varied 'fitness abilities' in our group. The boat trip around the island on our 'day off' was superb & great value for money. The location is great with 2 great beaches being in a short walking distance.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Take jelly shoes for getting in & out of the sea. Travel light. Take plenty of local currency to pay for restaurants / taxis. Just chill & let Matko & Maya give you a wonderful vacation. A great mix of activities & down time for relaxing on the beach & lots of great food & drink.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Both the food prepared at the house & in restaurants is locally produced & very fresh. On the island we either kayaked, cycled or walked. Matko has a great network of local businesses both on the island & in Split that he uses & recommend. All gave great friendly service.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Excellent - catered well for a mix of age groups & athletic abilities. Great way of seeing the island of Vis from 'local eyes'. But the best wait is not having to think about anything ... just trust Matko's recommendations.Cheri Takaki review 6 Oct 2019
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
Discovering the beauty of Vis and enjoying the wonderful hospitality of Maja, Matko and family. As I had been traveling through Croatia for almost three weeks it was relaxing to have a home base from which to explore the island. There are beautiful beaches nearby and the crystal clear blue of the Adriatic Sea made swimming every day a must. I really enjoyed biking on the island, except for close to the town of Vis there are few cars on the roads and once I understood that drivers are courteous and accommodating to visitors on bikes I felt very comfortable riding anywhere. Beginning the day with yoga in the pine forest with Maja was perfect. The kayak trip to Ruda Bay was memorable and I walked down to this beach twice more as it was always empty and quiet. The meals were wonderful, fresh and healthy and at my request almost always vegan. Matko and Maja are excellent chefs and are sure to provide you with delicious lunches and dinners. Zora always had coffee ready for us in the morning and she made us her special apple tart desert one evening. Marina had her hands full with the beautiful girls, Dora and Manuela but was always very kind and helpful.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
You will feel as comfortable as being at home so relax and take advantage of Matko's suggestions on which activities are best suited to the days weather and sea conditions. You can do as much or as little as you like.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes definitely. I believe that most of the food is grown on the island and the delicious wine was made on Vis. Matko grows and produces his own olive oil from trees in his orchard. The simple lifestyle of the residents of Vis reduces environmental impacts, of course and most of the island remains wild and in it's natural state. Vis could be a model for conservation.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Simply excellent! I could easily have stayed a month on Vis and the wonderful, energetic Maja and Matko and family really made this week a standout! Mahalo to all of you.Joan Retson review 29 Sep 2019

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
Going for a sunset walk around the cliffs from diamond beach to silver beach and watching the sunset.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Bring snacks and all toiletries you need as the house is in a remote location. As an activity for one day Matko drove me into Vis where i could get all the supplies I needed. Make sure you carry cash as lots of places dont accept card payment.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes. My activities were ecofriendly (kayaking, walking, swimming). Having a family host you means plenty of fresh authentic foods (you will be fed well!!) and hospitality and local know how without the environmental impact of mass tourism. Your money goes straight to the locals and bypasses the marketing/sales/advertising traps.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Perfect for me. Matko (the host) and the activity guide Maja (also an avid yogi) are lovely, helpful and attentive. I liked the balance between self selected activites before lunch and free time before and after dinner. The food was authentic, delicious home meals and they cater to every dietary requirement with pleasure. (I am lactose intollerant, the other group staying before me were a combination of celliac and vegans!)Be aware there is lots of free time (after lunch and dinner) to organise your own activities (visiting the beautiful nearby beaches, walking etc) but Matko and Maja can also assist you in booking a boat ride, military tour etc outside of their facilities.Julia Davis review 14 Sep 2019

Being on a beautiful island - eating local home cooked food & having all activities planned for you - sheer bliss!2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
We had a day or two to relax before the week which worked well to enjoy the most of the week. You need cash on Vis Island, aqua shoes are a good idea & mozzie repellent.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Local food & drink was sourced, tourism is a big money spinner for Croatians so benefits in terms of economy. Didn’t get to see or hear anything about environment or conservation - would have been nice to know more.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
A really great week as a single Mum with 2 teenage kids it worked really well. We enjoyed the activities and the thought & effort in hosting and the delicious food.Nikki McVeigh review 16 Aug 2019

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
We are a family of five (with two teenagers and a young adult) from Scotland and travelled to Croatia at the start of July 2019. Every minute of our vacation to Vis was memorable. From swimming and snorkelling in the warm, azure sea to cycling and sea kayaking, we enjoyed it all. The island boat trip and tour of former military installations were highlights. Our middle daughter's favourite activity was a gentle hike to the island's highest point with stunning views in all directions. Our son just loved snorkelling every day, spying all the little fishes in the shallows near the beach. Our family meal times were another highlight. Matko and his family went out of their way to prepare fresh, plentiful dishes we would all enjoy. Our preferences were always taken into account. As well as the food, our eldest daughter particularly enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere and visiting Vis Town. Mum tried yoga for the first time and was converted! Mind you, one-to-one instruction in a shady grove with the sound of the sea nearby is a far cry from a sweaty gym in Scotland!2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Others have said this too, but travel light. We took hand luggage only and had more than enough with us for the week we were away. The vacation is very relaxed so you won't need much more than shorts, swimwear and t-shirts and maybe one smarter outfit for the evening at a restaurant. If you are visiting in summer take mosquito repellent and plenty of sun block, especially if you intend to kayak. A small rucksack, hat and water bottle are essential too. While we took part in a number of activities there was plenty of down-time too. Embrace this - slow down, lie on the beach, read a book, play cards, talk. We felt rested and relaxed after our week away in Vis.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Tourism is important for the local island economy and since we were hosted by a family from Vis, we feel our vacation did benefit local people. Our meals were prepared using a lot of fresh local ingredients including fish, fruit and vegetables. We drank local wine and even the olive oil and vinegar was made by our host Matko, from olives grown on the island! The island of Vis is not yet over-developed. Our accommodation was traditional - simple and comfortable with everything we needed. While we did rely of the car for some of the activities, we certainly used a car far less than we would have done at home. The island of Vis relies on rain water collection for much of its fresh water. Coming from Scotland, we don't generally have to consider water conservation but we felt it was important for us and our children to understand the need to preserve water and to adapt our habits slightly. We took shorter showers and were mindful not to leave the tap running when we were brushing our teeth for example.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Matko, Marina and Mia couldn't have done more to make our vacation enjoyable and memorable. The island was beautiful. Its history intriguing, nature and wildlife diverse. Our vacation had something for us all. Our only regret is that we couldn't stay longer......Juliet Byrne review 25 Jul 2019
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
Wow! What a fantastic vacation! We have so many great memories that it is impossible to pinpoint a single, standout experience – we were bowled over by the beauty of the island and the incredibly generous hospitality of Matko and his family, which really makes this vacation unique, and we certainly came back feeling completely relaxed and that we had laughed a lot and made new friends. Matko and his wife Marina and mother Zora immediately made us feel like part of the family in their lovely converted fisherman’s stone house which originally belonged to Matko’s grandfather. A highlight for me was definitely meeting Matko and Marina’s 7-month-old twins, Dora and Manuela, who are adorable! The morning yoga in the forest with the inspirational and unflappable Maja was a perfect start to the day, and we found that the sea kayaking, cycling and hiking expeditions provided a perfect mix of relaxation, sightseeing and adventure. The authentic Croatian dishes conjured up by the family three times a day were really delicious – no one goes hungry! - as were the local, free-flowing organic wine and Croatian beer. And Matko’s barbecuing skills are second to none! There are two stunning beaches with just a handful of people on them only a few minutes’ walk from the house through the pine trees. We particularly enjoyed snorkelling from Diamond Beach in the late afternoon where we discovered a surprising diversity of fish and sea life around the rocks, followed by sundowner drinks at the beach bar, then a short walk home to be greeted by Roza the family golden retriever and a fabulous evening meal sharing the day’s adventures and jokes with Matko. We will definitely be going back as much to see the family as the beautiful island.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Enjoy the chilled vibe. You are in safe and experienced hands, so go with the flow! There may be days when the weather conditions are not suitable for kayaking, for example, so you might opt for a bike ride or hike instead, and while Matko and Maja will always make recommendations, they are eager for you to get the most out of your day, and so want to hear your suggestions and requests too. Some level of fitness helps, although this is not meant to be a competitive vacation, and no one will judge you for having to get off your bike and push it up the hill or for taking a refreshment break in the shade, or if you prefer to lie on the beach or discover hiking trails and new places for yourselves in your own time. Matko and Maja are really good at judging what would work best for you and can set the pace accordingly. On a practical level, we found the beach shoes we purchased at Split market to be invaluable on the rocky beaches and pebbles when getting out of the sea. You can certainly travel light (it’s particularly handy that the family provide bath and beach towels), and you can get away with dressing very casually especially if you opt for full board as you will generally be dining as a family.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
The unspoilt beauty of Vis Island with its crystal-clear waters, secret coves, diverse wildlife, stunningly beautiful towns and rugged hills are such a tranquil treat in this era of mass-tourism. Ssshhhhhh, don’t tell anyone! Matko’s local knowledge meant that he was able to recommend a wonderful, family-run restaurant which we dined at on our day off, and which we would not have discovered on our own. Staying at Matko’s meant that we ate fresh, local produce and drank organically produced wine – all delicious. Apart from the excellent military tour and a visit to Vis Town and Komiza, we got around under our own steam, whether by foot, bicycle or kayak. The two beautiful local beaches are only a few minutes’ walk away, and we kayaked to hidden coves with Maja (who has the patience of a saint when the paddling gets all out of whack), so there is no need to hire a car.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
This is an amazing vacation, partly because of the perfect mix of relaxation and activities to be enjoyed on this beautiful island, but particularly due to Matko being the consummate host, and the family and Maja being so welcoming and accommodating. Thanks again, we’ll be back!Abbe Nielsen review 5 Jul 2019
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
The whole week was excellent. Matko and Maja and Matko's family were all so welcoming that we felt like we were guests at a friend's house. The yoga in the mornings was a really nice way to start the day and the activities during the day -whether kayaking to the Green Cave or cycling to Komiza or cycling the back roads were great. Sometimes Maja led the activity sometimes it was Matko, sometimes it was both. Matko took us on a tour of the island's military history which was really interesting. The nearby Srebrna Beach is beautiful and a wonderful place to cool off after a bike ride or a hike. It's a short walk from Matko's. But in the end, it's the people - Matko, Maja, and the rest of Matko's family - that made this vacation really stand out.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
It seemed really helpful to treat our stay as if we were staying with friends - friends who know the area and are themselves very active. It may be obvious to most travelers, but we deferred to Matko's advice about weather and conditions and his suggestions as to whether the day might be better suited to biking or hiking or kayaking. Matko and Maja want their guests to have a good time, so being clear about your abilities and limits will help them do that. That said, it's an activity vacation, and having a little bit of a sense of adventure will probably make it more enjoyable; it's a good opportunity to push your limits a bit if you want. But if you just want to hang at the beach and read a book, neither Matko nor Maja will pressure you to do otherwise and Srebrna Beach would be excellent for that. Other than that the obvious things other people have mentioned: travel light but bring water shoes for rocky beaches, sunscreen, and mosquito repellent.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes, for most of the activities, we were mostly self-propelled. There was some car support, but with the exception of the military tour, we were mostly on foot or on bikes or kayaks. Most of our 'tourist dollars' went to Matko and his family and Maja, or to local restaurants that Matko had recommended.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Excellent. We loved our vacation week and heartily recommend this vacation option on beautiful Vis Island. Matko's advice on what to do was perfect and we think he is very good at assessing guests' abilities and wants regarding activities. The food was very very good - both the meals we ate at Matko's (he's a trained chef!), and at the restaurants that Matko recommended.Pete Green review 4 Jul 2019

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
We loved the beaches within walking distance as well as the boat ride around the island to see the spectacular scenery. Matko took us on a remarkable military tour. I thought I had no interest in this but he made it quite fascinating.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Take advantage of yoga in the morning. Maja was really good. She had a very relaxing voice and her exercises were good for even for this beginner. They really try hard to accommodate your food preferences so be sure to tell them. I can’t help but wonder how different our food would have been if we were not there with the more vocal vegan although most of our meals were wonderful and we appreciated all the vegetables. So many places focus on the protein and skimp on the veggies. The guided bike rides were geared to the rider with the least skill. They had great mountain bikes but the rides were on pavement. Don’t be afraid to let Matko and Maja know that you want something more challenging. This was a relaxed approach to an active vacation. Other than yoga, there was one guided activity which would be either morning or afternoon depending on the weather. The rest of the time you are free to enjoy the nearby beaches on your own.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
All the food served was local. Matko served home made olive oil and wine. We did happen to kayak to a lovely beach on international beach clean up day(purely by accident) but we got to meet locals and help pick up trash on the beach.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
The vacation was wonderful and relaxing. Breakfast was served 9:30 to 10 to accommodate yoga but we had many days when it was too damp to do yoga in the woods. It would have been nice to have an earlier breakfast on those days so we could start our activities earlier. We did some wonderful kayaking but the trips felt like they were cut short so we could return for the wonderful large lunch. We would have liked to take a packed lunch so we could spend more time where we kayaked to as well as the possibility of kayaking further.Meg Crosthwaite review 26 Aug 2019

We really enjoyed the vacation and loved all the activities. Even the cycling for me, which I was so terrible at! The boys (14-year-olds) loved all the things they did. My husband, my mother & I enjoyed yoga every morning, as well as kayaking, walking, cycling, snorkelling and the boat trip. We had a packed full of enjoyable week!2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
We went for half board, which suited us well (even though, the food was excellent at the house!), and enabled us to explore Vis a couple of evenings. Just to note that the company's half board is not the same as our usual understanding of half board. We hadn't realised that before we got there, so there was a bit of confusion on our part at the beginning. Their half board provides us with breakfast and lunch everyday (even on the boat trip day!), but just half of the week's dinner. You can pick the days of when you want to eat out. The host, Matko, is happy to give you recommendations about restaurants, if you don't want to make the decision yourself.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes. Most of the produce they used was from the island, and the activities they offer are environmentally friendly.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Matko and the team looked after us well, and it was a lovely house to stay in (off the beaten track). The island of Vis is so beautiful, with plenty of snorkelling and swimming opportunities. We loved the fact, the whole trip was so flexible and catered to our needs. We all had a great time!Marion Fuller-Sessions review 13 Oct 2018
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
It’s hard to say, as we had a most thoroughly enjoyable ten days staying with Matko, Maja and Matko’s mother Zora. (Matko’s wife was in Split, awaiting the birth of their twins.) Possibly the most memorable might be whizzing off almost as soon as we arrived to watch the last cricket match of the season of the Sir William Hoste Cricket Club! Later in our time we had a delicious Octopus Peka (cooked for hours over and under hot charcoals) at Roki’s next door to the club, and enjoyed seeing round their winery. We loved our boat trip with Dino, visiting Vis town and Komiza and Mount Hum, and various trips to local ‘konoba’s’ for drinks in the sunshine enjoying the lovely views. I liked walking to the local beaches. All the local ones seemed to be stone slabs but on our boat trip we spotted some sandier ones, possibly only really accessible by boat. Daily early morning yoga in the pine forest with the lovely Maja was certainly memorable and so most definitely were the delicious meals cooked for us by Zora! And the barbecues done by Matko after the (delightful) vegan guests had left!2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Be prepared for a lovely vacation! We came towards the end of September and it was hot by day but we were very glad of a jumper at night. Bring a supply of teabags if your favourite brew is not fruity teas. If you wanted to self cater - we did not - you would need to check how easy this might be. We started off in rooms downstairs and there was a fairly basic kitchen, when we moved to far nicer rooms upstairs there was a sink and a kettle but not much else. Matko and his family are so friendly and helpful so do let them know if there is anything you need or would like to do. I am sure they would always help if they could.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
As far as one could tell, almost totally. Everyone involved is local or from Split and the food all home cooked. There is no need to hire a car.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
It is hard to choose any one, as we had many memorable experiences. We enjoyed the boat trip down the coast, as the views were gorgeous; the sites were interesting; and the swimming stops were fun. Yoga in the woods in the morning, with a terrific instructor, was memorable. So, too, was the opportunity to walk to the beach to swim each day, and to be able to bike from the apartment, on a variety of routes. We also remember with fondness the home-cooked meals and the chance to interact with family and staff.2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Prepare for a relaxing week, with the opportunity to choose your own activities and schedule. We recommend the kayak trip to an isolated cove for swimming; the boat trip; yoga; biking; and hiking at least part of the trail to the highest point on the Island. We opted for "full board" and really enjoyed the home-cooked meals.3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes. We stayed with a local family, who bought from local merchants and used local guides. We visited several protected sites, such as the "Blue Cave," where our fees help in maintaining the site.4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Excellent. It was a wonderful, relaxing week. The Island is quiet and beautiful. We chose activities we really enjoy, such as yoga, swimming, biking, boating.
