Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.
Planet
We love bringing people to explore the natural paradise that is Costa Rica! And as a country that consistently leads the pack in green practices including renewable energies, environmental protection, and plastic use reduction, it's not difficult to visit Costa Rica while prioritizing a sustainable ethos.Basing ourselves in Playa Grande means that we are part of a small community located within a Las Baulas National Park -- an area set up to conserve and protect the many sea turtles that nest along the shores of this region including the great Leatherback -- and we make sure that guests are aware of responsible practices so as not to disrupt the turtles. The nature-based activities available, like visiting an eco-park and kayaking the estuary, are carefully vetted to ensure responsible wildlife interactions and values.
On this beach vacation, our boutique hotel boasts many eco-friendly habits like water conservation, organic local ingredients at their restaurant, and energy reduction efforts. We'll also sprinkle plenty of fresh and local bites into each day like tropical fruits (young coconuts, anyone?), plantain chips, or Pejibaye - a starchy, nutty fruit packed with energy.
On all of our trips, we focus on reduction of plastic and make sure that water jugs are available for refilling personal reusable water bottles. When we explore nature trails and relax on the pristine sands of Playa Grande, we ensure our guests practice “leave no trace” principles.
People
By selecting Playa Grande as the destination for this beach vacation, we are supporting a laid-back community that is a bit off-the-beaten-path and thankfully does not suffer from the crowds of over-tourism. The businesses and restaurants we patron are small, family-led and locally run endeavors that utilize local produce and products for their needs. The community leaders running them are known for offering comfortable and sustainable employment to local populations at fair wages. Our community partner for this trip is a well-established local organization that supports disadvantaged youth and their families in 18 of the surrounding communities. They provide much needed educational opportunities, nutritional support, legal support, medical and psychological care and more and we are proud to donate a portion of our sales on this trip to support their work.
Of course, while we explore the beauty of Costa Rica, we will also learn the philosophies of their culture like the ever-present motto: Pura Vida! More than a national slogan, this phrase that translates to 'pure life' encapsulates a lifestyle that is in tune with nature and each other, and we are sure to infuse that spirit into this trip.
