Comoros
The Union of the Comoros, as it’s officially known, is one of the smallest island nations in the world. If you haven’t heard of it, you’re not alone. ...
Unusual holidays guide
In French, they use the word ‘insolite’ to describe an unusual vacation. Which sounds a bit like insolent. Rebelling against the norm.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Visiting a beautiful part of the world that has not yet been developed to any great extent for tourism.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Be prepared for arrangements to be quite muddly and dis-organised at times, many local people are only just learning IT and social media skills. Be prepared for lots of friendly smiles and contact with local people. Brush up on your French!

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Most of the staff we encountered were local people, such as hotel staff and the local guides. These low key tourism ventures provide important employment and learning opportunities for local people, under the leader ship of some European staff. Not sure about reducing environmental impact. We, as tourists, snorkelled in the protected marine park, but alongside large numbers of local villagers illegally catching octopus etc. Not sure about supporting conservation either - we bought ylang ylang from local distilleries only to discover that the profits went, not to the local workers but a few wealthy owners of the companies.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Wonderful! We plan to make another trip with the company in 2023.

Read the operator's response here:

Unfortunately, these things do happen in Comoros, especially with the locals hunting fish and octopus. We do instruct our guides to explain to the locals that hunting in the marine parks is not allowed when they come across it. As in many places, there is tension in this area and the local authorities are in the difficult position of trying to balance the conservation needs with the local populations needs.

With regards to the Ylang Ylang plantations, these are all locally owned and operated. There is no co-operative scheme in Comoros so workers will be paid a wage for working there.

Hope that helps. All the best,

Aled

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The Cascasus mountains. Scenery amazing. Like stepping into a part of the world that hasn't yet been spoiled by mass tourism. The history of Georgia is
fascinating. Georgia is predominately a christian orthodox country and religion stills plays a significant role in people's lives despite years of soviet rule. One
can really experience serenity and spirituality in visiting some of the major cathedrals and churches.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Maximum 3 days in Tusheti. Bring Lomotil with you. Travel light.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

WE hope the locals in Tusheti benefitted. Otherwise, cannot see a significant positive factor regarding environment or conservation.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Excellent vacation. Really felt we were in a very different place with friendly people, fascinating and exotic sites and good fun.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

Planet and people

We are proud of our involvement in Comoros; a forgotten corner of the Indian Ocean. Tourism in the Comoros is virtually unknown, but we believe it is crucial to the country’s development. With high levels of unemployment and little in the way of foreign trade we want you to know that your trip will make a difference.

Our tour visit’s the country’s first National Park, ‘Parc Marin de Mohéli’, an area which protects dolphins, whales and sea turtles. In the park accommodation is lodge based, constructed from local materials and built by local craftsmen. Power is supplied by solar panels and all your food is locally sourced. The difference you make on this vacation is through the positive economic benefits to the local community. You are also supporting the efforts of the local people towards protecting the natural beauty of their islands.

One of the attractions of the Comoros Islands is the country’s unique cultural mix, a blend of African, French and Arabian. Today the official religion is a moderate form of Islam and you will be informed before travel on local customs and traditions in order that you are able to fully respect these beliefs.

We only employ local staff and unlike many operators we believe that to send a foreign Tour Leader along to accompany your trip is an unnecessary burden on your wallet and our carbon footprint. We believe that locals know best. Our local operators only use locally owned accommodation. This means your money stays in the area to benefit the local community. When possible we use local transport, (i.e. rail or bus) and we always use local restaurants, markets and shops. In doing this your travels are supporting and encouraging the development of local services.

We only work with operators who are as committed as we are to putting something back into the communities we visit. This may include giving a percentage of the profits from each tour to a foundation to help street children or local conservation projects. Furthermore, in order to allow our clients to make an informed decision on where a greater proportion of their money should be spent, we avoid including pre-paid full board meals where possible. Local restaurants and cafes then benefit. Our groups average only six clients, and many tours operate on a private basis with just two travelers. This has much less impact when traveling through rural areas, reducing our environmental and social affects.

Finally, to emphasis our commitment to Responsible Tourism all clients will receive a copy of our Travelers Code of Conduct with their travel documents.
