Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

Planet

Antarctica is the largest wilderness on earth and remains relatively unaffected by large scale human activities. To keep it that way, IAATO – the International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators has set out guidelines and regulations to protect and preserve this unique and pristine environment. All tourism-related activities are therefore planned and conducted with both environmental protection and safety in mind.

We use highly regulated, licensed vessels which are well equipped to operate in these remote ecosystems. We are fully compliant with all rules set out by IAATO. We carefully choose the ships we want to charter, and its small size has a far lesser impact on shore landings. We see our voyages to the Antarctic Peninsula as an expedition, not a sightseeing trip. Smaller ships, such as ours can navigate narrow water ways, and by carrying fewer passengers generates far less waste. We also carry any waste back to our home port, unlike some of the larger ships which do not allow for this.

Our pre-departure information pack provides our passengers with all the information required for their expedition, from what to take with you to practical advice on how to minimise your impact on the Antarctic environment and how to interact with the wildlife on the continent.

People

On this trip you will visit the local community living on the Falkland Islands. Seeing as there are only a few industries here and very little contact with the outside world, they are always welcoming us with open arms. All the guided services and hotels on the island are run locally and food and other commodities are also sourced locally, meaning profits go directly to the communities that live in the Falkland Islands.

We align ourselves with the Mawson’s Huts Foundation, which aims to conserve the Mawson Huts at Cape Denison in East Antarctica. The foundation was first established in 1997 and has already funded and organised more than ten expeditions to the site.

We also work with three different charities, including Project Peru who run an orphanage in Zapallal, and a shanty town outskirts of Lima. We also work with ANIA, a high-profile Peruvian NGO working with children to teach them about their local environment and how to manage it efficiently.
